My memories of my Grandfather are a mixture of laughter and pain. The pain is related to the loss of my precious mother, his daughter Pauline, at such a young age, the ripples of which have impacted so many members of our extended family for so long.
The laughter, however, is what remains and defines my memories of the man I knew as "Grampa Murray". I recall the smell of Pine Sol and newspaper by the door every time we visited. I recall his bringing Dunkin Donuts every time he visited our family in Liberty when we moved there from our adjoining home on Highland Avenue in Bangor. I recall him driving my brother Brian and I around Bangor and Brewer during an extended visit we had with him shortly after our move when we were very young. I remember him pronouncing the word "gnome" with a hard "G" , a short "O" and a long "E" like G'-nom-me. I remember him convincing me that he had a terrible creature living the basement of his Bangor home called the woof-a-goomis cat. If we listened very closely we could hear it growl and even howl down there below the floor boards of his kitchen. In his honor and to my great enjoyment I have passed along the woof-a-goomis cat to several younger generations over the years since.
These are some of the fond memories, which to this day bring a smile to my face, that I have of my Grandfather, Grampa Murray.
