Obituary for Rose-Anne Hall (Greenlaw)

Rose-Anne Hall
Orono
Rose-Anne Greenlaw Hall, 82, passed away peacefully and surrounded by her beloved
daughters and Airedale Terrier, Raj, at home on Monday, September 11, 2017 following a brief
and valiant battle with Metastatic Lung Cancer.
Born on December 27, 1934 in Presque Isle, Maine to Mona and Lloyd Greenlaw, her roots in
Aroostook County ran deep. From her love of the rolling hills and potato blossoms to the wide
open spaces and, especially, the people. Their warmth and friendship were a source of great
joy throughout her life.
Rose-Anne graduated from Bradford Junior College in Haverhill, Massachusetts. There she
made life-long friendships with other young women from across the country. She also attended
the University of Maine in Orono where she studied English. During this time she met and
married Bradford Allyn Hall of Rehoboth, Massachusetts, whose parent’s owned and operated
the Bradford Camps in the North Maine Woods. Her own family history on the Aroostook River
was a perfect match. Rose-Anne and Brad spent a lifetime of summers and falls on the shores
of Munsungun Lake, both at the sporting camps and later at their own camp.
Throughout her life, Rose-Anne brought out the best in those around her. Her elegance and
generosity of spirit were matched by her wonderful faith in life and people. Her warmth and
humor brought great joy to her family and friends. In addition to her husband Brad, who passed
away unexpectedly in July of 2016, her greatest loves were her two daughters (Anne and Sue)
and grandchildren (Emma and Peter) and son-in-law Scott. Anne’s career in the foreign service
took Rose-Anne and Brad on many wonderful trips to China, Poland, Colombia, Brazil, Scotland
and, most recently, Lithuania. In addition, she always looked forward to visits with Sue and her
husband, Scott, and their children Emma and Peter in Colorado.
Rose-Anne greatly enjoyed her years working in the University of Maine’s alumni and
development offices. Her colleagues became like family and she found her work building and
maintaining relationships with alumni and donors deeply satisfying. Afterward, she spent time at
Munsungun Lake, with her daughters in Maine and at their homes, and enjoyed sailing the coast
with friends on occasion. Rose-Anne read widely, was a beautiful knitter, and enjoyed her
home. She was a member of the Shakespeare Club.
After surviving two earlier bouts of breast cancer nearly three decades ago, she faced the
diagnosis of Stage IV Lung Cancer in late June with courage, buoyancy and grace. This
summer was spent with a never ending stream of visiting family and friends, and in the company
of her two daughters, who were at her side from the moment of her diagnosis to her passing.
A Celebration of Life will be held in June or July of 2018 at the Hall Home in Orono. Those
wishing to make a gesture in remembrance of Rose-Anne are asked to make a contribution to
the Orono Bog Walk Campaign Fund in Memory of Rose-Anne Hall at the University of Maine
Foundation, Two Alumni Place, Orono, Maine 04469-5792.
Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com.
