William L. Sherwood, age 68, passed away in the comfort of his own home on December 28, 2025, after a long, hard fought battle with illness. He was born in Dover Foxcroft on January 24th, 1957, the son of George L. Sherwood and Mae Tilley Sherwood.
William, also known as "Wild Bill," or "Billy" to those who were close, shared 27 years with his longtime partner, Ruth Cross, and held a special bond with his best friend and beloved canine companion, Cougar.
William spent many of his prime years as a small engine mechanic and working as a woodsman. He was known for his skill, hard work, and hands-on nature. He spent countless hours making memories doing the things he loved most-four-wheeling, fishing, and camping in the most remote areas, often taking a wheeler to get there. Some of his prime sites were in the Unknown, KI, and West Grand Lake. When at home, he could often be found tinkering on projects in the yard and enjoying a good barbecue, taking pleasure in life's simple moments. William was loud, funny, sarcastic, and rough around the edges, living life on his own terms, but he was generous with a big heart and those who knew him cherished every bit of his unique spirit. He will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his generosity of heart, and the love he had for his close family, friends, and faithful companion Ruth... and Cougar, of course. He leaves behind many, now to be cherished, memories and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Billy was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by partner, Ruth Cross; sisters, Ruth Burrill and Roxy Lawler and their families; son, William Beals and his family; his "step" children, that he loved as though they were his own, Chrystal, Stephani, Jason, and Kim and their children; his grandchildren, Dakota, Mary Ruth, Austin, Rylee, Kayla, Katrina, Jacob D., Trinity, Gabby, Jacob R., Brock and James. William was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by many cousins, nephews, nieces, and a wide community of friends who held him dear.
Relatives and friends are welcome to attend Billy's memorial service at 1pm, Sunday, February 1, 2026 at Calvary Chapel Penobscot Valley, 1116 Lakins Rd. Etna, Me
