Warren James Nelson, passed away at home on January 12, 2026, after a long illness.
Warren was born on December 13, 1952 in Caribou, Maine, the son of Ralph and Frances Nelson.
Warren grew up in New Sweden, Maine, where he learned the values of hard work, service, and loyalty that would guide his life. He was predeceased in life by his parents, and his brothers Ronald and Melvin Nelson.
Warren dedicated his life to serving the Katahdin Region in many capacities. He was deeply proud to be one of the very first D.A.R.E. officers in the state of Maine, helping guide and protect young people through education and leadership. He served as a park ranger for Baxter State Park, and as a police officer for the Millinocket Police Department, where he proudly retired at the rank of Lieutenant. He also worked part time for the East Millinocket police department. In addition, Warren generously volunteered his time with both the Millinocket and East Millinocket Fire Departments, always willing to step in wherever he was needed.
Warren was very proud of his Swedish heritage, often speaking fondly of his roots and the traditions that shaped his family history.
Above all else, Warren was a devoted family man. He shared 48 beautiful years with his wife, Jane of Millinocket. He was the proud father of his daughter, Johannah (Nelson) Sirois, who was truly the light of his life. He also cherished his son-in-law, Brian Sirois, and found his greatest joy in his two granddaughters, Emma and Alyx Sirois of Old Town, who meant more to him than anything in this world.
He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Jon Crawford and his wife Sonya of Millinocket, and his sister-in-law, Loretta Nelson of New Sweden.
Warren will be remembered as a devoted public servant, a man of integrity, and someone whose heart was as vast as the Maine outdoors he loved so dearly. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the communities he served, and the memories he leaves behind.
A springtime burial will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Warren's memory to the Bangor Humane Society, 693 Mount Hope Avenue, Bangor, ME 04401.
