Troy B. Varney, 55, passed away at home, April 2, 2025 following a 30 month battle with Glioblastoma. He passed with his son, Jackson, and his partner, Brandi, holding his hands.
Troy Benjamin Varney was born January 11, 1970, to James and Linda (Watts) Varney. Growing up in a Marine family, Troy had the occasion to travel in his youth and shared many tales of living in Germany and skiing the Alps, or South Carolina where he went shrimping with his parents and siblings. But "home" for many years was "Looks Point America", as his mother affectionally called it, in Jonesboro, Maine.
After college, Troy spent the early part of his career teaching, followed by work in the mental health and criminal justice fields. Most recently, Troy was a Juvenile Community Corrections Officer, working with young people - one of his many passions. Troy was equally happy when he worked with kids on a football or baseball field. "Coach Varney" had a heart for influencing youth off the field as much as on, and the kids he coached could often be heard chanting "L-E-O" standing for Love Every One. One of those young people, Jameson, found a special place in Troy's heart, coming to live with Troy and his family.
Troy lived his life all in and had many passions. He could be found most mornings in the gym or running outdoors, consistently trying to beat his last record. Afternoons were most often on a field, coaching or watching Jackson playing sports. Troy enjoyed running and lifting, coaching, and time with beloved family and friends. Troy was a loyal and boisterous Patriot's fan, making many a friend tailgating at Gillette stadium. He found great enjoyment in making corn hole boards for loved ones, and teaching the grandkids, who lovingly call him Poppi, to ski.
Troy loved exploring and traveling, most often to Florida and the Dominican. He and Brandi shared a love for camping and trying new craft beers. The place he found the most peace and enjoyment was at The Rugged Bear, the family's camp on Nicatous Lake, where he spent countless hours leisurely trolling the lake in pursuit of the elusive bass.
While cancer took many of the things that Troy loved so dearly, he battled glioblastoma with the same strength and determination he did everything else. Troy leaves behind his 17 year old son, Jackson Varney; his partner of 12 years, Brandi Farrington; Brandi's children, David Farrington and partner, Ashley, of Albany Township, and their children, Aiden, Mayson, Chloe, and Forest, and Hailey Farrington of Farmington, and her children, Aubree and Andrew; sister, Dennise Varney of Old Orchard Beach; brother, Randy Varney and his wife, Jeannette, of Jonesboro.
Troy, known as "Uncle T" or "UT," had a special place in his heart for his nieces and nephews, Ashley Stevens and her husband, Whitney, of Whiting and their children, Kole, Kiana, Kingsley and Kash, Tyler Varney and wife, Keirstan, of Marshfield and their children, Peyton, Parker and Paxton, and Cameron Varney and his partner, Alexis, of Yarmouth, Bryce Brestelli and her husband, Travis, of Westbrook, CT and their children, Charlotte and TJ, and Ross McEwen of Auburn.
