GLENBURN - Timothy J. Grant, 69, passed away unexpectedly June 15, 2026. He was born June 13, 1957, in Portland, the son of James A. and Nancy T. (Thyng) Grant of Orrington.
Tim grew up in Orrington and graduated from Brewer High School, Class of 1975. Shortly after, in September 1976, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. He was first stationed aboard the USCGC Cape Cross, where he participated in several high-stakes search and rescue operations. This set the pace for a distinguished career. In 1987, while stationed in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, he was recognized as a local hero by New England Monthly magazine, appearing on the cover and later being interviewed for a feature on the Today Show.
Tim's service took him all over the United States, including East Moriches, New York; Ketchikan, Alaska; New London, Connecticut; the USCGC Hamilton; Boston, Massachusetts; Coast Guard Station Ocean City; and several ports in California. Over his 30-year career, Tim received numerous medals and awards, including nine Good Conduct Awards, four Meritorious Unit Commendation ribbons, three Special Operations ribbons, the Humanitarian Service Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. He was also awarded the Coast Guard Commendation Medal for outstanding achievement while serving as the educational services officer and command financial counselor at Coast Guard Group Astoria in Oregon. Tim retired as a Master Chief Boatswain's Mate in Astoria in 2006.
Outside of his military service, Tim was an avid stamp collector, a passion that began at age 12 when he bought his first collectible stamp with money earned from mowing lawns. He was a dedicated member of the Bangor Stamp Club and devoted much of his time to buying and selling stamps. He also thoroughly enjoyed his weekly poker games with a close group of friends and made several trips to Las Vegas each year to play in various poker tournaments.
In addition to his parents, Tim is survived by his siblings, Dianne Grant, of Eddington, Judith Bouchard and her husband, Robbie, of Orrington, and Jeffrey Grant and his wife, Katherine, of Orrington; nieces, Danielle Quimby and her husband, Scott, of Winterport, and Lauren Grant and her partner, Draven Walker, of Gorham; Katelyn Grant, with whom Tim had a very special bond, and her partner, JJ Higgins, of Glenburn; nephew, Scott Bouchard and his wife, Courtney, of Orrington; great-nieces, Jenna and Becca Quimby of Winterport, and Olivia Bouchard of Orrington; and a very special uncle, Stephan Kinney of Ketchikan, Alaska.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00a.m., Thursday, July 16, 2026, at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 S. Main St., Brewer. All are invited to share conversation and refreshments in the Family Reception Rooms of Brookings-Smith immediately following the service. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Orrington, following the reception.
