Stuart Robert Dexter peacefully passed away on April 4, 2026 at his home in Orono. He was born in Camden, ME., on April 30, 1935, the son of Robert and Dorothy (Aldrich) Dexter.
Stuart graduated from Waterville High School in 1953, and the University of Rhode Island in 1957 with a degree in accounting. He served in the U.S. Army at Fort Lee, VA., and was later employed there as a civilian accountant. He then worked for the Internal Revenue Service in Boston as an Internal Auditor and, later, as Chief Accountant and Deputy Finance Officer at Dow Air Force Base in Bangor until its closure in 1968. Stuart opened his own accounting office in Orono in 1968 and worked until he fully retired in 2019. He was past president of the Maine Association of Professional Accountants and a former member of the Maine Board of Accountancy.
Stuart coached youth baseball for many years, from T-Ball up to high school age, in Millis, MA, Waterville and Orono. He was a long-time high school track official and a former member of the Eastern Maine Baseball Umpires Association.
Stuart is survived by his wife of 68 years and high school sweetheart, Shirley (Rancourt) Dexter; two sons, Stephen and his wife, Kerri, of Orono, Timothy and his wife, Lorena, of New Gloucester; and daughter, Cheryl Nelson of Waterville; six grandchildren, Christine Allen and her husband, Ryan, of Old Town, Melissa Kavarsky and her husband, Sam, of Connecticut, Michael Nelson and his wife, Danielle, of Windham, James Nelson and his wife, Sierra, of Caribou, Trent Dexter of Portland, and Troy Dexter of South Portland; eight great-grandchildren, Cooper, Levi, Jackson, Logan, Parker, Lyla, Ivee, and Piper; niece, Meg Dexter Rice of Arizona; nephew, Mark Dexter of Washington. He was predeceased by his brother, Arthur Dexter and his wife, Georgene, of Newcastle.

A graveside service will be held at 11am on Wednesday, April 15, 2026 at Pine Grove Cemetery, Waterville, ME.
