Hampden - Shirley M. Homstead, 87, of Hampden passed away peacefully on August 23,2025. Born and raised in Hampden, Shirley lived a life marked by devotion to her family, compassion for others, and an enduring love of learning and creativity. She was the beloved wife of the late George E. Homstead, with whom she shared many years of marriage till his passing in 2003.
Shirley was the proud mother of three children:
Edward Homstead, Scott Homstead (who predeceased her in 2021), and Tammy Carlin. She was also a loving grandmother and great grandmother.
Shirley's early dream was to become a nurse, a goal she pursued out of high school. Marriage and motherhood came first, but her dedication to helping others never wavered. After raising her family and serving as a paramedic for many years, she returned to school at the age of 46 and graduated summa cum laude from Husson College, fulfilling her long-held passion for nursing. Alongside her professional accomplishments, Shirley was an important partner in her husband's contracting business, working as his office bookkeeper and secretary. Outside of work, she was an artist at heart. She found joy in playing the piano, painting, creating stained glass, knitting, and cooking for her loved ones.
She is survived by her son Edward Homstead and his wife Marie, daughter Tammy Carlin, grandchildren Ashley Homstead, Derek Mandigo and wife Natasha, Amanda Boucher and husband Jay, Jacob Homstead. Paige Barteaux, Madison Carlin and Shelby Carlin She is also survived by 13 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by one grandson, Brandon Homstead. She is fondly remembered by many extended family and friends.
A graveside service will be held at Neally's Corner Cemetery, 1101 Kennebec Rd, Hampden, ME., on Tuesday, September 2 at 1:00pm.
