Orono - Shawn Alan Richards, 46, died at his home on March 29, 2019, surrounded by his loved ones after a courageous battle with brain cancer. Shawn was born on June 24, 1972, in Bangor, the son of Mark Richards and Paulette (Tidwell) Cunningham.
Shawn graduated from Old Town High School in 1991. He married his High School sweetheart, Nicole (Blanchard) Richards, and they settled with their family in Orono. Shawn and Nicole had two daughters, Jordan Marie Richards, and Katelyn Elizabeth Richards.
Jordan and Katelyn were Shawn’s pride and joy. He often talked about his daughters being his greatest accomplishment. Shawn was an amazing father who enjoyed the company of “his girls”. He coached their softball teams, kissed away their bumps and bruises, and was always there to make everything all better. The girls activities were very important to Shawn and he never missed a single event. Shawn enjoyed making dinners for his family and used the dinner table as a place to maintain the values they grew to share as a family. He took great pride in the longevity of his relationship and marriage with his one and only true love, Nicole.
Shawn had many hobbies, but his favorite was working on cars. This is something he enjoyed doing with his childhood best friend, Robbie Robichaud. Shawn had several hot rods over the years, but his favorite was his 1971 Chevy Camaro Z28. In this car, he was “1 Bad Dad”.
He is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Nicole; his daughters, Jordan Richards and Katelyn Richards, both of Orono; his father, Mark Richards and his wife, Linda, of Milford; his mother, Paulette Cunningham and her husband, Dana, of Orrington; his best friend and sister, Melissa Sellars and her husband, Jon, of Brewer, Lisa Hughes and her husband, Chris, of Cornish, Devon McLaughlin of Jay, Brianne Brasslett and her husband, Scott, of Greenbush; his brother, Brad Richards of Kenduskeag; and several very special nieces and nephews who all loved their uncle Shawn.
A service to celebrate Shawn’s life will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at the Church of Universal Fellowship, 82 Main St., Orono, with the Rev. Lorna Grenfell, celebrant. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments in the church vestry immediately following the service.
