Sandra L. (Young) Doughty died April 14, 2025 after a short illness. She was born June 2, 1941 to parents, Donald W. and Olive R. (Higgins) Young.
Sandra grew up in South Brewer, Maine, and moved to Bangor, Maine, as a teenager, graduating from Bangor High School, Class of 1959. In November of 1960 she married George L. Doughty Jr., her best friend of nearly 60 years who "always made her laugh."
A passionate gardener and avid reader, one of Sandra's favorite quotes was Cicero's, "If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need." Sandra was a member of several area garden clubs and the Maine Herb Society. She was most proud of her achievements in floral arranging, creating beautiful gardens, and campaigning to have Wintergreen named as Maine's official state herb. One could often find Sandra engrossed with "her nose in a book," or watching her favorite British Murder Mysteries.
Surviving are her children and their spouses, Melissa (Doughty) and Christopher Rice, of Waterville, Maine, George L. III and Sharon (Musall) Doughty, of Rensselaer, Indiana, and William and Erin (Chamberlain) Doughty, of Warwick, Rhode Island; grandchildren, Nicholas, Megan, Liam, Kayla, and Sam; and great grandchildren, Noah, Grayson, and Nico; brother, Ronald and Joann Young of Fredrick, Maryland. In addition to her husband and parents, Sandra was predeceased by siblings, Richard, Berton, and Linda; and baby daughter, Julie.
