Richard Wentworth Briggs

ORRINGTON - Richard "Dick" Wenworth Briggs, 89, passed away on Father's Day, June 21, 2026, at a Bangor hospital. He was born February 28, 1937, in Houlton, Maine, the son of Donald Wentworth Briggs and Avis May (Boutilier) Briggs.

Dick attended Old Orchard Beach High School. Knowing what he wanted, he took the entrance exam for the inaugural class for Heating and Air Conditioning at Maine Vocational Technical College in South Portland. Dick's license for Oil, Propane, and Solid Fuel was Number 24. While attending college, he was a member of the Naval Reserve and worked part-time. In 1957, he married his high school sweetheart, Merry Christine Torrey, and they were married for 47 years before her death in 2004. Dick and Merry were avid stock car racing fans traveling from track to track in their motor home. They also had a love of dachshunds. Once they had their first dachshund, they were hooked.

In addition to his wife and parents, Dick was predeceased by his brother, Chester and sister, Dawn Mary. He is survived by his sisters, Leotta and Novella; son, Donald and his wife, Wendy; daughter, Loretta Davis and her husband, David; seven grandchildren, David, Jessica, Scott, Heather, Zachary, Nathan and Mary and eight great-grandchildren, Titan, Rocklyn, Kiley, Addison, Natalee, Michael, Leona and Zachary.

Per Dick's request, services will be private. Interment will be in Marston Cemetery beside his wife, Merry. Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com.
