Phillip A. Pratt

Brewer

Phillip (Phil) Pratt, 79, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on October 22, 2026. He was born in Massachusetts in March 1947 to Augustus Kingman and Mary Louise Pratt and spent most of his youth in the outskirts of Boston and the Gulf Coast of Florida.

After graduating from Hingham High School, Phil entered Dartmouth College in 1965 with a full U.S. Navy ROTC scholarship and earned a B.A. in English in 1969. At that time, he was commissioned Ensign in the U.S. Navy where he served as a Line Officer on three U.S. warships as part of the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. After an honorable discharge in 1974, Phil earned an M.Ed. in Counseling at the University of North Florida and then worked as a school counselor and administrator at the elementary, middle, and post-secondary levels. In 1989, he earned an Ed.D. in Counselor Education at the University of Maine, where he spent the rest of his career as an institutional researcher, data analyst, and graduate faculty member. Phil retired from institutional research in 2013 but continued to teach graduate courses, receiving the College of Education's Excellence in Teaching Award in 2018. He truly enjoyed campus life and valued the lifelong friendships made over the years.

Phil cherished his 43 years of marriage with Mary and being a father to Jamie. At home, he loved being the designated family cook, furniture maker, and chief home fixer-upper. Phil also thoroughly enjoyed living with the antics of Higgins, Sammy, and Maddie (the resident Cairn, Westie, and Dachshund) and traveling with his family throughout the U.S., Europe, and Canada.

Phil leaves behind his wife, Mary Devoe-Pratt; daughter, Jamie Pratt, and her life partner, Adam; siblings, Ted Pratt and Nancy Wolfertz; in-laws, Joe and Brenda DeRoche; and numerous nieces, nephews, and close friends. He is predeceased by his parents and older brother, Buzz Pratt.

Phil navigated the challenges of Parkinson's disease during his final years with the support of many dedicated family members, friends, and health care providers. Phil and his family would like to thank everyone, especially the staff at Beacon Hospice who made his final days at home possible.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 5, 2026 at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. John's Catholic Church, 217 York Street, Bangor. Following the Mass, all are welcome to stay for conversation and refreshments. A private interment at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery will be held at a later date.

Those wishing to remember him in a special way, may contribute in his memory to the Brewer Public Library, 100 S. Main St. Brewer, ME. 04412.
