Dr. Miltiades Zacas, adjunct professor of Civil Engineering, University of Maine, 78, passed away October 6, 2026, at home in Orono. Dr. Zacas was born in 1948 in Mytilene, Lesvos Greece, the son of Konstantine and Irene (Vouvoule) Zacas.
Dr. Miltiades was educated at the National Technical University of Greece earning a degree in Civil engineering. He later completed his MS in Germany and his PhD in Scotland in rock mechanic engineering. He served for 14 years as Managing Partner of Pangaea Consulting Engineers, Ltd. In Athens, Greece and worked for public works, tunnels, bridges, harbors and dam projects. He had over 34 years of engineering experience specializing in geotechnical investigation, rock mechanics and foundation design on projects in Maine and internationally (including Greece, Saudi Arabia, Somalia and Colombia). He was a geotechnical engineering consultant for FGS/CMT, in Bangor for the design and management of geotechnical projects. He has been a faculty associate at the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Maine, where he taught graduate and undergraduate courses in geotechnical and sustainability engineering from 2000 till the present semester.
He was a good story-teller, liked to travel, dance, cook and enjoy life. He was cherished for his kindness, self-lessness, care and humor. He spent Summers in his favorite place on the Lake of Como, the village of Varenna, Italy and his favorite island of Lesvos, Greece. He spoke Greek, English, Italian and German. Dr. Miltiades is survived by his loving wife, Dr. Dorothy Klimis-Zacas, professor of Clinical Nutrition, University of Maine; his daughter, Dora Zacas; son, Konstantine Zacas; stepson and his wife, Michael-John and Natalia Tavantzis; grandchildren, Anastasia and Lykourgos; and his sister, Sophia Zacas.
He was predeceased by his parents, Konstantine and Irene Zacas.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call from 1-2 PM, Tuesday, October 13, at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 90 Sanford St., Bangor, where a funeral service will be held at 2 PM, with Rev. Father Leo Schefe, officiating. Interment will be held at Riverside Cemetery, Orono following the service.
