Maud Louise Sanborn, 95, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on March 1, 2026, in Brewer, Maine. Born on July 10, 1930, in London, England, Maud lived a life defined by resilience, love, and an unwavering dedication to her family and community.
During World War II, Maud served with pride in the British Women's Land Army, contributing to her country's efforts during a time of great need. Her service reflected her strength and determination-qualities that became hallmarks of her character throughout her life.
In 1958, Maud emigrated to the United States with her then-husband Carlton "Sam" Sanborn Sr. and their children. Transitioning to life in a new country brought its challenges, but Maud faced them with steadfast resolve. She worked diligently to support her children as a single mom, first at Quality Bakery and later as a maid at the Holiday Inn for many years. Her dedication and excellence were recognized through numerous awards during her tenure at the Holiday Inn-a testament to her strong work ethic and commitment.
Maud found joy in life's simple pleasures. She cherished time spent with her family and had a special affection for her cats and the birds she loved to feed. Her warmth and care left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
In her later years, Maud lived with her granddaughter Carla and Carla's family, who lovingly cared for her up until death.
She is survived by her daughter Linda Smith; her son Carlton Sanborn and his wife Janice; granddaughters Carla Smith-Moore and her husband Anthony, Kayla Camper and her husband Zak; grandsons Rockey Smith Jr., Aarron Sanborn, and Eric Sanborn; great-grandchildren Jeffrey Smith; Brock and Cole Smith-Moore; Devon and Danica Thomas; Gavin, Mila, Alexa and Gage Sanborn; as well as her sister Rosalie Jones and her husband Allan. She also leaves behind her nephew Steven Jones and niece Christine Jones.
Maud was predeceased by her parents Odile and Arthur Hayward; sisters Odile (Diane) Hayward and Simone Hayward; son-in-law Rockey Smith Sr.; as well as other beloved family members who preceded her in death.
Maud's legacy is one of perseverance, kindness, and love. Her memory will be treasured by all who were fortunate enough to know her. May those memories bring comfort to those she leaves behind.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date to honor Maud's extraordinary life.
We love and will miss you Nana. It's not goodbye, it's toodaloo. We will see you on the other side, rest easy Nan.
