Mary Ann Ayoob, 66, of Brewer, Maine, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2026, surrounded by her family after a devastating diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer.
Born on September 8, 1959, in Fort Fairfield, Maine, Mary Ann lived a life that touched many hearts through her gentle spirit, quiet strength and dry sense of humor. She found joy in simple things, being surrounded by familiar faces, participating in activities at her day program, and sharing moments of laughter with those who knew and loved her. She especially loved listening to ABBA music, watching 70's sitcoms and going to Dairy Queen, activities that brought her comfort and happiness. Her warm presence and kind heart left a lasting impression on everyone she met.
Mary Ann was a longtime resident of Branches Group Home, a private home for adults with intellectual and developmental challenges and autism where she was lovingly cared for and built deep and meaningful relationships. She was also a cherished participant at Penobscot Valley Industries (PVI) adult day program where she enjoyed engaging in a variety of activities designed to enrich the lives of adults with a myriad of intellectual challenges. Her time there brought her joy, purpose, friendship and a strong sense of community.
Mary Ann was the beloved daughter of the late George and Marie Ayoob. She is survived by her loving sisters, Lisa Ayoob of Portland, Maine and Sharon Nickerson and her husband, Bruce, of Holden, Maine; her cherished nieces, Jordan Pease and her husband, Christopher, Hannah Laverriere and her husband, Brandon, and Gabby Nickerson; she also leaves behind her great-nieces, Sawyer and Rowan Pease; and her great-nephew, Otto Laverriere.
Mary Ann's family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Branches LLC, Brian Noble and his dedicated staff for providing Mary Ann with a wonderful life filled with dignity and meaning; her devoted and dedicated house manager, Shawna Robinson, for her unwavering support, love, care, and commitment to Mary Ann over the years; to Michele Alley and her staff at Penobscot Valley Industries for the care, community and joy they brought into Mary Ann's life over the years; to the St. Joseph's hospice team for their empathic comfort care; and to two outstanding medical professionals, Dr. Kimberly Lieber and Devon Malay, FNP-C, for meeting Mary Ann where she was and for the respect and compassionate care they provided to her and our family.
Donations in Mary Ann's memory may be made to Penobscot Valley Industries (amicusgroup.org), an organization with support programs that provide meaningful activities and community for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism. You may also choose to donate a personal gift to Branches, LLC (branhesllc.com), Mary Ann's cherished home for many years where she led a dignified life filled with love and care.
Mary Ann was a gentle soul. Her life was one of great challenge but also one of resilience, optimism and love of family. She will be deeply missed and forever held in our hearts. May she rest in eternal peace.
A private celebration of Mary Ann's life will be held at a date to be determined.
