Marvin Stokes

January 13, 1932 — May 2, 2025

Marvin F. Stokes went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on May 2nd of 2025 while at his residence at Sylvia Ross Assisted Living Home in Bangor, Maine. He was born on January 13th, 1932, the son of Fatey Samuel Stokes and Della Bernice (Sheffield) Stokes of Dawson, Georgia. He was a graduate of Terrell High School, Perry Business School, and Benjamin Franklin University with a bachelor's degree in Commercial Science. Marvin served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1956 to 1987. In November of 2019, Marvin had the honor of unveiling the Hudson Veteran's Memorial Monument in Hudson, Maine. He was also employed at the National Security Agency for 35 years until his retirement in 1987. He was a certified Professional Telecommunications Officer and a Resources Manager and served three years as Chief of Communications at an overseas location during his employment.

Marvin and his devoted wife, Mary, enjoyed serving the Lord and helping others. He was an active church member and served in a number of Christian Leadership positions. Mary was a bible teacher for over 65 years, a counselor, prayer warrior, church soloist, and a musician. They resided in Cheverly, Maryland prior to retiring to their farm in Hudson, Maine. Marvin was a member and Chairman of the Hudson planning board from 1990 to 1995. He was a Lifetime member of the Pheonix Society, Inc. In addition to his various managerial, and technical skills, he enjoyed farming, fishing, boating, woodworking, renovating and building houses, camps, and garages.

Marvin was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Mary Deane Stokes, of Hudson, ME and Albany, Georgia; a granddaughter, Angela Marie (Stokes) Mahoney of Levant, ME; as well as one sister, Myrtle Coxwell and her husband, James, of Sasser, Georgia. He is survived by two daughters, Kathryn L. LaForest and her husband, James, of Hudson, Maine, as well as Theresa Ann (Stokes) Ricks of Beckley, West Virginia; one son, Gregory M. Stokes and his wife, Cynthia, of Levant, Maine; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 11am, Sunday, May 18, 2025 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor, with Pastor Rick Libby officiating. Relatives and friends are welcome to call from 10am until the time of the service. Interment will be held at the Hudson Mohawk Cemetery, Hudson, immediately following the service.
