Clifton - Marie Mae Barker, known by most as Mae, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and friend, passed away on September 29, 2026, surrounded by her loved ones at a Bangor hospital. She was born March 19, 1954, in Van Buren, Maine, the daughter of David Leo Morin and Bertha Rose (Dumais) Morin.
Mae graduated from Limestone High School, Class of 1972. Following graduation, she attended the Eastern Maine General Hospital School of Nursing. While attending nursing school, she met the love of her life, Steve. After graduating from nursing school, Mae and Steve were married on May 31, 1975.
For more than four decades, Mae devoted herself to the nursing profession and to the patients and families entrusted to her care. Working in the cardiac unit was more than a career; it was a calling. She brought compassion, strength, patience, and a steady presence to some of the most difficult moments in people's lives.
Throughout her many years of service, Mae cared not only for her patients but also for their families, offering reassurance during frightening moments and comfort when it was needed most. Her dedication, knowledge, and commitment earned her the respect and affection of her colleagues and the many people she cared for over the years.
Yet, as meaningful as her career was, her greatest joy was her family.
As a wife, Mae was a loving and devoted partner to Steve. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter and adventure, especially in their later years. As a mother, she gave her children unconditional love, guidance, encouragement and a place they could always call home. And as a grandmother, she found a special kind of happiness in her grandchildren, proudly celebrating their accomplishments and treasuring every moment she shared with them.
Those who knew Mae will remember her for her warm, beautiful smile, quick French wit, generous heart, strength, sense of humor, stubborn determination and kindness. She had a way of making people feel cared for and never hesitated to lend a hand, offer encouragement or simply be there when someone needed her.
Mae leaves behind a legacy of love and caring that will live on in her family, the nurses and colleagues she inspired, the patients whose lives she touched, and the countless memories she created along the way.
Mae is survived by her beloved husband, Steve Barker; her son, Brian Barker of Acton; her daughter, Kristen (Barker) Murray and her husband, Peter, of Orrington; and granddaughters Adrienne Oliver of Brewer, and Madilyn and Jocelyn Murray of Orrington; her sister, Therese Morin of Houlton; and her brother, Roland Morin of Washington, North Carolina.
She was preceded in death by her parents, David and Bertha Morin.
A life of more than 40 years in nursing was a life of service, but her lifetime as a wife, mother, grandmother and daughter was a life of love. She gave so much of herself to others, and her absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
She was deeply loved. She will be profoundly missed. Her legacy of caring, her beautiful smile, and the love she poured into her family will remain with us always.
Relatives and friends are invited to join us in celebrating her life from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 18, 2026, at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor.
