Judith "Judy" Lynn MacArthur, 77, of Dixmont, passed away March 19, 2026, after a brief illness. She was born on February 16, 1949, in Island Falls to Rita E. (Prescott) and Lawrence E. MacArthur of Hersey. Judy graduated from the University of Maine Orono in 1971, where she met her life partner, Sarah "Sally" Medina. Judy worked as assistant manager of the Bangor region CVS locations for many years and then at Bangor Payroll until her retirement in 2017.
Her greatest love was for her family, and she attended every family event or milestone possible. Judy enjoyed a good family sing-along, looked forward to her yearly "sister weekends", and treasured many special times with her nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. She was a special "hug monster" to Sophie, Clara, and Bode and was always good for a silly pun or big hug!
Judy's earliest memories were of farm life in Crystal, and she was a country girl through and through. Her favorite things were being a Mainer, her dogs (she tolerated Sally's cats), all things elephant, puttering, and building things with wood. At their Richardson Lake camp, she enjoyed boating, fishing (with no real threat to the fish), campfires, and entertaining family and friends. Judy was an avid Ski-dooer well into her 70's. In recent years, she and Sally traveled a good part of the Eastern seaboard in their Travato van, visiting friends and family while making new friends in the Travato community. Judy enjoyed women's basketball, a good family sing-along, and loved being a part of the Dixmont community for 50 years.
Judy's lifelong passion was genealogy, inspired at an early age by an aunt who gave her some old family photos and letters. She loved solving the puzzles of who came before her and spent years scouring libraries and websites, as well as gravesites, for information. Her extensive research enabled her to trace her and Sally's family lines, and some of her other families and friends' lines as well.
Judy is predeceased by her parents, maternal grandparents Iva (Desmond) & Ray Prescott of Island Falls, paternal grandparents Belle (Brewster) and Clinton MacArthur of Hersey, as well as her sister June Walsh, brother-in-law Richard Walsh, and niece Jody Lee Beaulieu of Millinocket.
She is survived by her partner, Sally; siblings, Rhonda Tower (Anthony) of Molunkus, Lawrence MacArthur, Jr. (Catherine) of Millinocket, Carolyn Morrill (Kevin) of Wells, and Amy Morneault (Gilles) of Millinocket. She leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and close friends, especially her dearest friend Connie Langley of Plymouth, whom she considered family.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m., on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor. Private burial will take place at a later date in Crystal.
In honor of Judy's love of animals, particularly elephants, donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. (sheldrickwildlifetrust.org).
