Penobscot - Joan Frances (Rooney) Markley, 79, passed away at her home on April 27, 2026, surrounded by her family. She was born July 13, 1946, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Frank and Doris (McLaughlin) Rooney.
Joan graduated from Archbishop Prendergast High School, Class of 1964, and West Chester University, Class of 1968, in Pennsylvania. She was a school teacher in Pennsylvania for ten years. Joan married Jerald Markley, and they settled in Penobscot, Maine, to raise their family. They were married for 47 years. She was an active member of Stella Maris Parish in Bucksport and Castine, and will be remembered for her faith and service to the Church.
Surviving in addition to her husband, Jerald Markley, are her daughters, Shannon Crocker and her husband, Erik, of Bangor, Maine; Erin Braun and her husband, Brooks, of Richmond, Virginia; nine grandchildren; sister, Mary Ann (Rooney) Judge, of Keller, Texas; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call from 6:00-8:00 pm on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at the Stella Maris Parish, St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 158 Franklin St., Bucksport. All are invited to share conversation and refreshments in the Church Parish Hall immediately following the Mass. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon, Pennsylvania.
