JANE ANN KILLPACK BURGER,
BREWER, MAINE - Jane Burger, 87, died on April 26, 2025, at a Brewer nursing home. She was born October 29, 1937, in Berea, Ohio, to James and Dorothy (Divelbess) Killpack. Her parents' origins as Iowa farmers and educators were a strong part of the family identity and influenced Jane's approach to life.
Jane was a graduate of Shaker Heights High School, the University of Michigan and earned a Master of Library Science at Western Reserve University (currently Case Western Reserve University). In 1961, she married Charles S. Burger and worked at the Cleveland Public Library while Charles completed medical school.
After several years in North Carolina and Virginia, the family moved to Maine in 1971. Jane and Charles loved their adopted state and all it had to offer. In 1971, they bought a home formerly owned by Hanibal Hamlin's son. Jane embraced the challenges of owning and fixing up a house built in the 1820's and took pride in decorating it and maintaining its original colonial style.
Jane was a devoted mother to Eric and Gretchen, supportive of their activities and life paths, even when they were different and unfamiliar (careers in the Army and the arts) from her own.
In 1984, Jane supported Charles in forming his own primary care practice, becoming the financial manager.
Active in the Bangor community, Jane served the Medical Spouse's Auxiliary, P.E.O. service organization, and on the board of the Mable Wadsworth Center. An appreciator of language and the arts, she participated and performed plays in Shakespear Club.
Among Jane's lasting impressions is her curiosity about and enthusiasm for the people in her life. A great listener and cheerleader, Jane made everyone feel special and cared for. She had the brightest, welcoming smile and navigated life's gifts and challenges with resilience and grace.
Surviving Jane, are her husband, Charles Burger; son, Eric Burger and his wife, Christie, of Tennessee; daughter, Gretchen Burger, of New York; grandchildren, Bradley and Garrett Burger and her sister, Mariellen Frank, of Ohio.
A celebration of Jane's life will be announced at a later date. Those who would like to remember her may make gifts in her memory to Mabel Wadsworth Center, https://www.mabelwadsworth.org. Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com
