INEZ MARY (MERCADEL) GEORGE
April 16, 1941 - May 2, 2025
GLENBURN, ME. Inez Mary (Mercadel) George died on Friday, May 2nd at St Joseph Hospital at the age of 84. Inez was born in Brookline, Massachusetts on April 16, 1941 to Earl Mercadel, Sr. and Gladys Underwood Mercadel. She grew up in Boston (Roxbury), Massachusetts with her multigenerational Underwood and Mercadel family. Inez attended the Julia Ward Howe School and graduated from Roxbury Memorial High School. Inez worked as a fulfillment clerk at the Sears & Roebuck in The Castle in Fenway, then worked as an Information Operator for the New England Telephone Company in Bowdoin Square. Inez married Lloyd George from Bangor, Maine at the Elliot Congregational Church of Roxbury on July 25, 1964, and they settled into an apartment in Bangor. On May 9, 1965, their first child, Linette, was born. They lived on Allen Street on June 10, 1969, when their son, Nathan was born. Together, Inez and Lloyd built their home in Glenburn, where they have resided since May of 1972. In March 1972, Inez's mother, Gladys Mercadel died, and her brother, Earl "Bunny" Mercadel, Jr., came to live with the family in Glenburn. When both children were in school, Inez began working part-time in the Glenburn Elementary School Cafeteria. After a few years of working in the Cafeteria, their daughter, Stacy, was born on March 8, 1977.
When asked, Inez would tell you she was a stay-at-home mom; however, she was employed in several areas over the years. She was a caring and compassionate employee who developed dear friendships with her coworkers at every place she worked. She worked at Hickory Farms seasonally, then as a cashier at Wholesale Depot. At the store's closing, she became a Certified Unit Secretary studying at Beal College. Inez worked as a Unit Secretary on the Surgical/Orthopedic Unit at St. Joseph Hospital. She next moved to SJH Home Health and Hospice practice as a medical secretary. Inez worked at Seniors Plus, before working as a secretary and file clerk at Maine Urology. She retired after leaving Maine Urology.
Inez was a faithful Christian with a servant's heart. Lloyd was heavily involved in the youth programs at First Christian Church, UCC and Inez became his partner in youth group activities, even before they were married. Over the years, Inez continued in youth group activities, sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, was a Trustee, a Deacon, delivered holiday meals to those in need, taught new mothers at Kings Daughters, and was active in the Ready Workers. When First Christian Church was closed, the family began attending Hammond Street Congregational Church, UCC. Here, Inez served as a Deacon, volunteered at the suppers and fairs, supported the Hymn Sing started by Lloyd, and worked with the Women's Fellowship Group. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout Troup leader, served on the PTA, made costumes for the John Bapst annual musical, sewed ties for the John Bapst Chorus, sewed prom gowns for her daugthers, baked pies, casseroles, and rainbow squares for bake sales and sports banquets, and drove thousands of miles to deliver her children to practices and lessons.
Inez was a friend and support to everyone. She was the woman who had other children getting off the school bus at her house. Inez let those mother's who didn't finish work before the bus arrived, to let their children have a safe supervised place to be after school. Her children were welcome to bring a friend home and there was always room for two more at her table.
Inez was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Lloyd George. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother Bunny Mercadel, her aunts Edna, Muriel, Helen, Sylvia, and Vicky, and her uncles Collie, David, John, Michael and Henry. She is survived by her aunt Laura Horne, many nieces, nephews, and cousins, including special cousins Karen Hogan and Kevin Roberts. Her inlaws who predeceased her were Edson George, Sr. and Helena George, Virginia, Millard, and Edson. She is survived by sister-in-law Carol George Ross, brother-in-law Everett George, and brother-in-law Roger George, as well as several nieces and nephews. Inez is survived by her three children, Linette George of Glenburn, Nathan George of Miramar, Florida, and Stacy George of Glenburn, Maine. Services will be at Hammond Street Congregational Church, UCC on Thursday, May 8th. Relatives and friends are invited to call to visit from 12 p.m. until the time of the service at 1:00 pm, with a reception to follow. Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com
