Harriet Bernice Edgecomb Lambert age 98 lived most of her life in Eddington, Maine. She went to be with her Heavenly Father and her Savior Jesus on January 13th while receiving Hospice care at her daughter Dawn's home in Wells, Maine due to a stroke she suffered on December 31.
She was born May 16, 1927, the second of six children to A. Raymond Edgecomb and Stella Morrill Edgecomb in Limestone, Maine. She grew up in "God's Country", as she and her mother were quick to tell us, on the family potato farm. She graduated from Limestone High School and followed her older sister Dena to Bangor to attend the Nurse Cadet program at Eastern Maine General Hospital in 1944.
She graduated a year after the war ended and a week later married Donald Edward Lambert. Together they had four children, in 4 years and 2 days as she always told folks. She did not drive until her children all had learned to drive and was content to stay at home and raise her family.
She did go to work at Eastern Maine General during a nursing staffing crisis when her youngest was in 3rd grade. She was a float charge nurse, then an ER and orthopedic room nurse before being recruited by a Dermatologist who came to town and set up an office across the street from the hospital.
She was an amazing cook and hostess. She enjoyed having the house full and everyone was always well fed. She made the best pies and always had some baked goods to offer guests. She was often encouraged to start a bake shop but preferred baking for family and friends. She loved picking berries, especially her raspberries on the bank of the Penobscot River and used them in many of her pies and jams.
She loved her Lord and could be found every morning reading her Bible and praying at the kitchen table. She was a faithful Nursery worker, Sunday School teacher, Pioneer Girl leader and Women's Bible study attendee where she attended church at Calvary Baptist Church in Brewer.
Her family and especially her grandchildren were her delight. She so enjoyed attending their school, church, and sporting events as well as graduations and weddings.
She left Eddington a few years after the death of her husband and lived with her daughter Sally in Bangor. She stayed active in the church until her decline in short term memory made her uncomfortable outside the home. She continued to enjoy friend and family visits and trips to the "lake". She enjoyed two summer cottages, one at Craig Pond purchased by her husband and son in the 1970's and one at Great Pond purchased by her grandson more recently. Even this year she climbed the 75 steps up to Chris's camp to sit on the deck and enjoy the family.
Harriet would want us all to take comfort that she is celebrating her graduation to Heaven. Harriet, (Sister, Mom, Nana) is survived by two sisters Dena Stanton and Pearl Smith, and one brother Hughie Edgecomb, by her four children Raymond and spouse Sandra, Dawn and spouse Theodore Weber, Carol and spouse Douglas Smith and Sally Patterson. She has 11 greatly loved grandchildren plus 13 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband Donald and two brothers Arthur and Perley.
Harriet's family would like to thank St. Joseph Family Medicine for the exceptional care she received through the years, the Bangor Fire Department for the many times they have come to her home to assist her after falls and Northern Light Emergency Room, Stroke team, ICU and Grant 5 for the excellent care given during her recent illness.
A graveside committal service is planned for July. In Lieu of flowers Harriet would ask that contributions would be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 61 State St., Brewer, ME. 04412.
Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com.
