CARMEL - Gloria P. Small, 88, passed away at home, May 17, 2026. She was born in Carmel, April 12, 1938, daughter of the late Thomas and Edna (Crosby) Murray.

Gloria graduated from Carmel High School in 1956. Always an active town citizen, she was a co-founder of the Carmel Historical Society and was very active in Carmel Days since its inception.

Gloria was a gardener and known for her cooking skills, canning and freezing thousands of quarts of produce through the years that fed her family. She contributed largely to Carmel Days festivities and enjoyed making dough boys at the concessions and was always ready to help out the town when called upon. She was known for her bread, yeast rolls, pies, and choke cherry jelly. She especially liked to pick wild raspberries (accompanied with young recruits) where she would then turn the berries into the most delicious pies. She was an avid seamstress and once made quilts for Christmas presents for all her children and grandchildren. She hung wallpaper for many years with her dear friend, Jan Noyes. She followed high school basketball games cheering for her son's, grandchildren's, nephew's, and brother-in-law's teams. She enjoyed restoring old furniture and painting houses. She loved friends visiting, family gatherings, her garden, her home and her many flower and rose beds.

Gloria was predeceased by her granddaughter, Kelsey Small. She is survived by her husband of nearly 70 years, Douglas Small; her children, Scott (Charlotte) of San Antonio, TX, Lori Small of Perkinsville, VT, Steven (Lauri) of Brewer, Gregory Small (Bessie) of Carmel; Grandchildren, Gage Small of Hampden, Colby Small (Brynn) of Levant, Morgan Small of Bangor, Chloe Brown of Bangor, Garrett Brown of Phoenix, AZ, Heather Phipps (Cody) of Severance, MD and Ryan Small of San Antonio, TX.

She had 7 great grandchildren. Survivors also include sisters Norma Reed (Roger) of Carmel, Edna Frankland of East Holden, and Marlene White of Sebastian, FL. She had many nieces and nephews.
