After graduating from Stearns High School in 1959, he began working as a laborer at Great Northern Paper Mill in Millinocket, ME. Outside of work, he enjoyed the outdoors. He spent time fishing, hunting and camping. Many summers were spent camping on Branch Lake as well as camping trips to Old Orchard Beach, and Nova Scotia. The family looked forward to their annual camping trip each fall to the Skowhegan Fair. Other hobbies included woodworking and you could find him in his garage making furniture, toys and miniature log cabin doll houses for his children, nieces and nephews.
