George Newhall

May 21, 1928 — January 13, 2026

George B. Newhall passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 13, 2026. He was 97 and a WWII and Korean War veteran. George was born on May 21, 1928 in Lynn, MA to George E. and Thelma (Berry) Newhall. He eventually moved to Bangor when his stepfather Theodore Johns was stationed to Dow Air Force Base. He was the oldest of 4 siblings: Donald Newhall, Theodore Johns Jr, Robert Newhall and Linda Allen.

George graduated from Bangor High School, then enlisted in the U.S. Marines stationed at U.S. Marine Headquarters in Washington, D.C. He spent two years there, was honorably discharged, but reenlisted and was stationed in Quantico, VA. Between tours when he was in Bangor, he met Constance Bridgham whom he later married in 1952 and she joined him in Quantico. They have been married for 74 years.

After leaving the service, George worked for 32 years at Grants Dairy as the office manager. In 1983 he left the dairy and later trained to become an Employee Assistance Program representative for the State of Maine. He spent 6 years finding help for state employees who were having personal problems. George also was 46 years sober and very active in AA.

George is remembered for his kindness and his love of his family. He was a passionate sailor and hunter. His favorite activity was sailing his boat around Penobscot Bay from Castine Harbor, especially when his family could join him. He also raced his sailboat for several years in the Maine Retired Skippers Race that is held every summer in Castine. His most cherished memories were taking his grandkids sailing where he made sure they all learned how to sail and master a 'man overboard' drill.

George was a dedicated Bangor troop greeter. George and Connie seldom missed greeting the troops who stopped at Bangor International Airport on their way to or back from active duty in a foreign country. In 2019, George had the pleasure and honor of returning to Washington D.C. with the Maine Honor Flight for veterans.

George was also active in many City and local fraternal organizations. He belonged to the American Legion for over 60 years, and was a member of the Marine Corp League, ANAH Temper Shriners and Masonic Lodge. He was also American Legion Post 194 Commander for a time.

George leaves his wife Connie of Bangor, son Arthur (Toni) Newhall of Falmouth, MA, daughter Julia (Daniel) Buduo of Worcester, MA and daughter Ellen Newhall of Yarmouth, ME. His family includes 6 grandchildren, Derek Newhall, Paul (Elizabeth) Jameson, Jessica Newhall, Emily St. John, Danielle (Luke) Campbell, and Steven (June) Buduo, and 7 great-grandchildren, twins Caleb and Boaz Jameson, Simon Jameson, Asher Jameson, Jackson Campbell, Joseph Campbell, and Francis Buduo. He also leaves many nieces and nephews.
