George W. Fraser

On February 12, 2019, George W. Fraser, best known as Geo, passed away peacefully at his home in Cape Charles, VA, surrounded by family members and his loving wife Joanne of 63 years. Geo was born May 2, 1926, in Richibucto, New Brunswick, Canada, son of William and Marie (Daigle) and predeceased by his brother, Edward L. Fraser and sister, Catherine Duffy. Geo immigrated to the United States in 1928 and grew up in Bar Harbor, Maine, where he graduated from Bar Harbor High School in 1944 and then graduated from Coburn Classical Institute in 1948 and Colby College in 1952. 

He was a WWII Army Veteran while serving at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC. Geo worked for New York Life Insurance for 47 years in which time he became a life member of the Million Dollar Round Table, elected to the Agents Advisory Council, served as President of Eastern Maine Life Underwriters Association, and received the National Quality Award for 27 years. As a former parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Brewer, ME, he served on the Church Council, chaired the Bishop's Campaign and also chaired the Building Fund for the then new church. As an outdoor enthusiast, he enjoyed playing golf and was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved to tell jokes and stories.

Geo is survived by his wife, Joanne K. (Steckley); son and daughter-in-law Louis and Deborah Fraser, Brewer, ME; and daughters Barbara Fraser, Portland, ME; Linda and son-in-law Terry Mitchell, Garland, ME; Patricia and son-in-law Michael Hall, Cape Charles, VA; and Catherine Fraser and son-in-law Daniel Randall, Washington, DC; grandchildren include Malcom and Marissa Mitchell, Garland, ME; Heather and spouse Adam Knowles; Ian and spouse Jessica Fraser; and four great grandchildren, Jack and Hannah Fraser, and Evan and Ryder Knowles, all of Brewer, ME.

The family would like to thank the staff of Riverside Shore Hospice for their excellent care and compassion.

A memorial reception to celebrate the life of George W. Fraser will be held from 1:00-3:00 p.m., Saturday, July 25, 2026, at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor.
