HAMPDEN - Elthier Louise Sonia, 78, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Aug. 31, 2013, at a Bangor hospital surrounded by her loving family. Elthier was born Oct. 11, 1934, in Brewer, the daughter of Wesley Sr. and Frances (Jones) Rankin.
Elthier grew up and was educated in Bangor and Brewer. She began high school in Bangor where she was the school's first ever female drummer. She then moved to Brewer and was a 1952 graduate of Brewer High School. Elthier loved her Lord, and traveled to Jerusalem to walk the very ground Jesus did, a dream she had for many years. Elthier was a faithful member of the Hampden Highlands United Methodist Church where she was active in several church activities. Elthier was one of the first Troop Greeters among the many in Bangor. In her spare time, Elthier enjoyed cross-stitching, needlepoint, and crocheting, but most of all loved spending time with her family. Elthier will be remembered as a loving and caring person as well as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.
Elthier is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Frank B. Sonia Jr. of Hampden; her children, Cheryl McGowan and husband, Joe, of Milford, David Sonia and wife, Renee, of Hampden, Frank A. Sonia of Biddeford, and James Sonia of Saco; grandchildren, Amanda Infante and husband, Joe, Nichole Spaulding, Leeann Kaiser, Thomas Kaiser, Tyler Sonia and Rita Saucier; great-grandchildren, Abigail and Gavin Infante, and Aiden Higgins; a brother, Wesley Rankin Jr.; sisters, Norma Seiple, Barbara Hammond, Rebecca Debraak and Marilyn Nelson; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Elthier was predeceased by her parents and a sister-in-law, Frances Dragon of Connecticut.
In keeping with Elthier's wishes, there will be no funeral services. Memorial contributions in Elthier's honor may be made to Hampden Highlands United Methodist Church, 44 Kennebec Road, Hampden, ME 04444; or to the Elthier L. Sonia Breast Cancer Awareness Fund, care of Affiliated Charities, P.O. Box 931, Bangor, ME 04402.
