HAMPDEN AND DEER ISLE - Douglas Wade "Doug" McPike, 87, passed away on January 31, 2026, at a Bangor hospital. He was born on September 30, 1938, on his grandmother's kitchen table in Waite, Maine. Doug is the son of John R. and L. Avis (Williams) McPike.
Doug graduated from Hampden Academy and completed a post‑graduate year at Maine Central Institute. After serving in the U.S. Army, he earned a bachelor's degree in business from the University of Maine in Orono. Doug went on to build a varied career in forestry, real estate, and sales before becoming an entrepreneur, owning and operating Young's Canvas Shop for more than 20 years, taking great pride in the quality of his work and the service he provided to the community. In retirement, he continued his commitment to others by volunteering as a VA driver for local veterans for five years. Doug had a deep love for fishing, cherishing memories of Atlantic salmon trips along the Miramichi River with his father and brother, and he especially treasured time spent with family, friends, and his brother Ivan at the beloved family camps on West Musquash Lake and Oxbrook Lake. Doug will be remembered for his joyful, adventurous nature, his unwavering love for his family, and his generous heart. As a close friend once said, "if you were lucky enough to know Doug, you were lucky enough."
Doug is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Bonnie (Eaton) McPike; son, John "Aaron" McPike, and wife, Wendi, of Auburn and their son, Josh; daughter-in-law, Charis, and daughter, Emily; stepson, Thomas "Chris" Cole, and wife, Tascia, of York and daughters, Courtney, Kelsey, and Lindsey; step-daughter, Jackie Spathakis, and husband, Charles, of Stonington, Connecticut and their son, Cole, and daughter, Emma; sister, Karen Pomper and husband, Bill, of Boulder, Colorado and their son, Andy, and daughter, Kathy; sister-in-law, Sue McPike, and her son, Ryan. Doug was predeceased by a brother, Ivan McPike.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call from 1-3p.m., Sunday, February 8, 2026, at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 45 Western Ave, Hampden.
