Hermon - Our amazing mother, Dorothy M. (Nichols) Hewes, passed away on March 10, 2026 and is now together with her husband, Malcolm E. Hewes. She was born November 25, 1940, in Limestone, ME., the daughter of John W. and Vivian (Moore) Nichols. She moved to Hudson, Me., when she was four years old. She met the love of her life, Malcolm, in 1957. They married on November 6, 1957. Together, they raised six children; Donald, Donna, Deanna, Dana, Delia, and Darlene.
Dorothy grew up gardening and farming for her family and, later, for her father-in-law and her own family, as well as countless other children. Of course, you couldn't stop in for a visit without a game of cribbage! Dorothy was one of the pioneers of Women Truck Drivers, starting her career in the late 50's. When she was not driving truck, she could be found in the barn milking cows or maybe in the kitchen cooking for her family or canning. Dorothy was so proud of all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, Dorothy was predeceased by her son, M. Donald Hewes; and daughter, Darlene F. Hewes. She is survived by her children, Donna Smith and her husband, Doug, their children, Amy Cyr and Brandi Allen, Deanna Witham and her husband, Andy, their children, Andy Witham and Mac Witham, Dana Hewes and Marilee Shorey, their children, Amanda Wain and Danielle Hewes, Delia Hewes; and daughter-in-law, Sandra Rodriguez, her children, Carol-Ann Thomas and Donnie Hewes; 12 great-grandchildren; very special friend, Nicole Richardson.
A funeral service will be held at 3pm on Wednesday, March 18, 2026 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor. Relatives and friends are welcome to call from 1pm until time of service. The family would like to invite all to gather at the Penobscot Snowmobile Club, 795 Bog Road, Hermon, following the service. Interment in Snows Corner Cemetery, Hermon, will be announced in the spring.
