Winterport - Donald L. Smith, Sr., 72, passed peacefully on January 2, 2017 after a long illness. He was born July 17, 1944, in Newport, the son of John H. and Inez L. (Thompson) Smith.
Donald attended Hampden Academy and shortly after he began his career in truck driving. Donald also served in the United States Army reserves for four years. He was an active member in the Hampden Academy Boosters Club for many years. Donald enjoyed camping, gardening, but especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Gerry Carr; brother, Billy Smith; step children, Mickie Bedard and Scott Mingo; grandson, E.J. Grover. Donald is survived by his wife of 26 years, Donna Bedard; four sons, Donald L. Smith Jr., and his wife, Diane, Brian J. Smith and his wife, Vonda, Jay Smith and his wife, Melissa, and Bert Smith and his partner, Trudy; step-son, Derek Mingo and his wife, Michele; two step-daughters, April Bedard and her partner, Corey, and Marie Lavin and her husband, Harold; two sisters, Inez Buxton and Betty Roach; eighteen grandchildren, Adam, Ashley, Crystal, Charles, Ryan, Regan, Riley, Duncan, Emmett, Mattie, Brandy, Jake, Josi, Clancey, Mandi, Jeremy, Taylor, and Mackenzie; four great grandchildren, Gracie, JJ, Mariah, and Izaiah; uncles, cousins, and friends.
A graveside service will be held later in the spring.
