Bangor, Maine - Debra Jean England Scully, 70, of Bangor, passed away Sunday, May 25, 2025, at Northern Light EMMC, Bangor, after a long struggle with metastatic breast cancer. Debra was born in Bangor on February 18, 1955, to parents Maurice A. England and Evelyn T. Ricker.
Debra was a 1973 graduate of Bangor High School. After high school Debra attended D'Lor Beauty School in Brewer, following which she worked for Roger George, who became a cherished lifelong friend to Debra and her future husband, Michael Scully. Mike had rented an apartment from Roger while attending the University of Maine in 1977, and subsequently did odd jobs for Roger around his shop, where Debbie was working. Attraction and romance followed by marriage in 1980 were inevitable. They had no children.
Following a two-year stint in Missouri for Mike's schooling, the couple returned to Bangor and made a home there. Debbie worked in a variety of positions, including in retail as sales clerk for Rines' and later for Marshall's, as a licensed pharmacy technician for Downeast Pharmacy, and as support staff for First MRI at EMMC, retiring in 2017.
Debra deeply loved her friends and family. She was excited to become a member of the extended Scully clan and she was embraced and loved by them all. She insisted on attending all family events when possible, and there were many. Debbie loved cooking and had a large collection of cook books and hand-written recipes that she would get from the Food Network or on the internet. She was handy at crafts too and did quite well at whatever she set her mind to. She even made her own beautiful wedding dress. Embracing one of Mike's main interests, she became an avid hockey fan. As season ticket holders during U. Maine's hockey heydays, they watched many exciting games together.
Debra greatly enjoyed regular day trips with Mike to places along the Maine coast on many a beautiful summer or fall day. Her favorite day trip was to stop at the Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound for a lobster and some steamers, followed by a ride around the park loop road and a walk around the shops in Bar Harbor village. They also enjoyed traveling out of state occasionally including trips to Quebec City, NYC, Toronto, Halifax, San Antonio, Las Vegas, and Florida, as well as overseas to England and Ireland.
Debra is survived by her husband, Michael Scully; sister, Betty, and husband, Ernie VonTobel; niece, Debra Ricker; nephews, David Smith, Steven England, and Alan England; sisters-in-law, Shannon Phair, Michelle Johnson, and Erin Joseph; brothers-in-law, Patrick Scully, Sean Scully, Kevin Scully, and Brendan Scully; many special nieces and nephews on the Scully side and a multitude of great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, and even one great-great-great-nephew. She is also survived by a special group of close friends, including Donna and Ron Crane, Debra Rice and Michael Grenier, Kelly Gatcomb, Julie Scribner, Roger and Shirley George, and Geoff and Sue Clarke. She was predeceased by her parents, Maurice England and Evelyn (Ricker) England; and her brother, Jon R. England.
A Celebration of Debra's life will be held from 12-3 p.m., Saturday, September 6, 2025, at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St., Bangor.
