Hampden - David Joseph Trefethen, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away on November 30, 2025, in Bangor, Maine. He was born March 18, 1938, in Columbia, MO to Joseph M and Helen (Brigham) Trefethen. He married his wife Janice in December of 2008.
David graduated from Northfield Mount Hermon School in MA. He went on to receive his B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Maine in 1960, where he was a member of Phi Mu Delta. He received his M.S. in Civil Engineering at the University of Missouri in 1968.
David served proudly as a commissioned officer in the United States Marine Corps with the rank of Captain, serving most of his time in the Far East.
His career started in California and led him back to Maine where he raised his family.
He retired from the University of Maine as Associate Director for Engineering Services. He was a lifetime member of ASCE, and served the town of Orono as Chair of the Town Council. After retirement he could be found taking road trips all over Maine on his motorcycle with friends.
He loved his family and was so proud of them and all that they have accomplished. He was a quiet man, always a gentleman, meticulous about his appearance, and everything he touched.
During his final years, as his health declined, David's smile and blue eyes still lit up the room. He was loved and lovingly cared for by the staff at Westgate Center.
He is survived by his loving wife, Janice; his sons, Joseph and wife, Lori, Steven and wife, Kristi, John and wife, Wendy; grandchildren, Addison, Ella, Alexa, Colby, Bryce, Tyler, Parker, Benjamin, Annabel, and Elida; Great granddaughter, Evangeline; and the mother of his children, Elizabeth Sublett; brother John and wife Laurie, sister Martha Clark, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, his niece Debbie Dennison, and nephew Todd Trefethen.
There will be a graveside service in the spring. Gifts of remembrance in David's name may be sent to Toys for Tots or the charity of one's choice.
