David Cole Chalfant, 84, of Sedgwick, Maine, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2025, at Winterberry Heights Memory Care in Bangor, Maine.
Growing up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, David was the second of three children born to Edward Trimble Chalfant and Helen Louise Cole Chalfant. After moving to Coral Gables, Florida for his teenage years, David graduated from Roanoke College, where he served as president of Kappa Alpha fraternity. He further honed his passion for cooking and entertaining at Cornell Hotel and Hospitality School before following his true calling of inspiring students in the classroom. For over 35 years, David lived in Montgomery County, Maryland and dedicated himself to education as an English teacher and administrator with Montgomery County Public Schools.
Outside of his family, David's deepest love was Cabin Cove, the family summer camp in Sedgwick built in 1924 by his grandfather, Henry Ernest Cole. After retiring to Sedgwick in 2011 David created countless cherished memories where his generosity was on full display by hosting and entertaining family and friends at his famous dinner parties. David was also very active in the Sedgwick community, volunteering at the Sedgwick School and the Sedgwick-Brooklin Historical Society.
There was nothing David delighted in more than watching his grandchildren shine in plays and sporting events and just enjoying time together in Maine. He was a loving and devoted father and grandfather and a fiercely loyal and supportive friend and he will be missed.
David was predeceased by his parents; his first wife, Julie McBriety Chalfant; and their son, Phillip; and his brother, Rt. Rev. Edward Cole Chalfant.
David is survived by his sister, Constance Chalfant Walker; by his son, Andrew and his wife, Tricia, and two dear granddaughters, Isabella and Violet; by his son, Matthew and his wife, Jennifer, and three dear grandsons Cole, Thomas, and Liam; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
A small celebration of David's life will be held in the summer at his beloved Cabin Cove in Sedgwick, Maine.
