Darrell Frederick Thompson, 74, of Hampden, Maine, passed away on July 12, 2026, after a courageous battle with esophageal cancer.

Born in Milo, Maine, Darrell was the son of the late Frederick W. Thompson and Betty Lou Bryant McQuarrie.

Darrell dedicated much of his life to serving others through education. He taught at Maine Central Institute (MCI) and John Bapst High School, where he made a lasting impact on countless students. He also shared his love of athletics as a football, baseball, and basketball coach, mentoring young athletes both on and off the field. Later in his career, he worked for many years at Avalon Village Retirement Community, where he was known for his dedication, kindness, and strong work ethic.

Outside of work, Darrell was an avid sports fan. He was a lifelong Boston Red Sox and New York Giants fan and rarely missed an opportunity to watch a game.

The greatest joy of Darrell's life was his family. He was a proud and devoted father and an incredibly loving Grampy. Nothing made him happier than spending time with his children and grandchildren, and he especially loved cheering them on from the sidelines at their sporting events. Whether it was football, baseball, basketball, volleyball, or any other activity they were passionate about, he was one of their biggest fans. His grandchildren always knew they could count on seeing Grampy in the stands, cheering them on with a smile and an immense sense of pride. He was also known as the coolest Grampy, always sporting in-style Converse sneakers, AirPods, his signature jeans, and his white sports cap-a detail his grandchildren loved and will always remember.

Darrell is survived by his daughters, Erin Thompson O'Connell and her husband, Kristopher O'Connell, of Hampden, and their children, Jacob, Isla, and Sophia; and Emily Thompson and her son, Lincoln Thompson Davis. He is also survived by the mother of his children and lifelong friend, Gayle Thompson Smillie, and her husband, Richard; his sister, Valerie Robinson, and her sons, Matthew Robinson and his wife, Aysha, and Zach Robinson; his sister, Lori Kurzius and her husband, Eddie, and their daughters, Laura, Christina, Julia, and Sophia; and many other nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends.

In addition to his father, Frederick Thompson, Darrell was predeceased by his beloved grandmother, Irene V. Thompson, who lovingly raised him and helped shape the man he became; his sister-in-law and lifelong friend, Susan Dow; his brothers-in-law and best friends, Stephen Johnson, Benjamin Dow and Clint Robinson.

Darrell also had a deep love for music and an incredible natural talent for it. He taught himself to play both the guitar and piano, a reflection of his determination and curiosity. Some of the most cherished memories for his daughters were falling asleep as children while listening to him play "Leaves on the Seine" by David Lanz-a simple, beautiful tradition that will forever remain close to their hearts.

Darrell had an incredible sense of humor and a quick wit that could brighten any room. He had a gift for making people laugh, especially when they needed it most, and believed that laughter could carry people through even the hardest of times. His jokes, playful teasing, contagious laugh, and ability to find joy in everyday moments are gifts his family and friends will cherish forever.

He had a way of making ordinary, everyday moments fun and memorable.

Whether you knew him as Mr. Thompson, Daddy, Pop, Grampy, or simply Darrell, you knew someone who cared deeply about others, loved wholeheartedly, and left every life he touched a little brighter than he found it.

The family welcomes extended family, friends, former students, athletes, colleagues, and all whose lives Darrell touched over the years to join them in celebrating his life.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Darrell's life during visiting hours on Friday, August 14, 2026, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Chapel of Brookings-Smith in Hampden. A funeral service will immediately follow at 3:00 p.m.

In keeping with Darrell's wishes, family and friends are invited to continue celebrating his life at Seasons Restaurant and Sports Bar in Bangor immediately following the service. Darrell wasn't one for sad goodbyes. He would much rather have everyone together, sharing stories, laughing, remembering the good times, and celebrating the life he lived. The family encourages those attending to honor him by doing exactly that.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Ciaran McNamee, Namrata Patil, MD and the exceptional team at Brigham and Women's Hospital; Dr. Kamal Sahu, Caitlin McNally, and the compassionate staff at Northern Light Cancer Care; and the dedicated caregivers at Ross Manor. Their collective kindness, expertise, and compassion throughout Darrell's journey meant more to our family than words can express.

While our hearts are heavy, we know Darrell would want us to smile more than we cry, laugh more than we mourn, and continue sharing the stories that keep his memory alive. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever our Daddy, Pop, Grampy, and friend.
