Charles William Brooks Sr.

DIXMONT - Charles William Brooks, 87, and his beloved wife, Jeannine Marie Brooks, 75, passed away within days of each other, reunited in eternal peace after 58 years of marriage. Jeannine passed peacefully surrounded by family on July 23, 2026, and Charlie followed shortly after on July 28, 2026.

Jeannine was born on June 30, 1951, in Haverhill, Massachusetts, to Grace (Laperle) and James Comeau. Known affectionately by her siblings as the "Middle and the Best," Jeannine dedicated much of her life to her work and community. Throughout her career, she held managerial roles at the Ground Round, Epstein's, The Curtain Shop, Bangor Savings Bank, Dirigo Pines, and the Hilton Garden Inn-where she was once ranked #1 in the world across all Hilton properties. She ultimately landed at The Witham Group, earning the Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence at the Bar Harbor Grand Hotel. An active member of the Chamber of Commerce, Jeannine possessed a heart of gold, a gift for gab, and a warm spirit that could persuade anyone while making them feel it was their own brilliant idea. She was a selfless person; always wanting the best for others even as she battled her illness.

Charlie was born on January 6, 1939, in Lincoln, Massachusetts, to Maude (Mandago) and Albert Sumner Brooks. Full of life and affectionately known as "Crazy Legs" for his love of dancing, Charlie initially worked for the town of Weston, Massachusetts, on the road crew and driving snowplows. Seeking a simpler life for their growing family, Charlie and Jeannine relocated to Maine in 1978. There, Charlie opened the 3rd Street Market in Bangor and later worked in custodial and landscaping roles for the University of Maine, Bangor and Brewer Housing Authorities, Ames Department Store, and ultimately Walmart, where his helpful presence made him a community favorite before retirement. Charles was the family's resident meteorologist. He loved keeping precise track of temperatures, rain, and snow-and made sure everyone knew exactly what to wear before stepping out the door and to plan accordingly.

Together, Charlie and Jeannine built a vibrant life rooted in family and simple pleasures. They shared a passion for camping, exploring the country, visiting Civil War battlefields, and caring for their animals, including their sassy cat, Lily Mae. Charlie was a classic car enthusiast who could identify any make and model from the 1930s onward, a flower gardener, a passionate bird watcher, and the family historian who cherished old photos and passing down traditions. Above all, Jeannine's boundless kindness and humor paired seamlessly with Charlie's gentle warmth and love for storytelling.

They were preceded in death by Jeannine's parents, Grace and James Comeau; her brother, William Comeau; her sister, Rose Willey and husband, Bill; and brother-in-law, Frank Tevault. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Maude and Albert; his sister, Olive Harvell and husband, Jack; brothers Albert Brooks, and Richard Brooks and wife, Agnes; brother-in-law, Alfred Spanger; daughter, Karen Beck; and granddaughter, Jennifer McMorrow.

Their love and legacy live on through their children, Charles Brooks Jr., James Brooks, and Laurie Jean; Jeannine's sisters, Louise Tevault, Christine Kadish and husband, Peter, Terri Kochakian and husband, Ed, and Irene Lane and husband, Phil; her brother, Jack Comeau and wife, Sharon; Charlie's sister, Carol Spanger; and sister-in-law, Arlene Brooks.

They are also remembered by their cherished grandchildren: Kristen, Aaron, Tyler, Kody, James, Ryan, Anthony, Jason and John; as well as their great-grandchildren: Hailey, Cassidy, Austin, Addison, Logan, Callie, Carter, Madisyn, Kenna, Colton, Anthony, Jasmine, and Victoria.

A joint celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor.
