Beverly Silsby McLean
September 23, 1934 – October 25, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and cherished memories that we announce the passing of Beverly Silsby McLean, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Beverly peacefully departed this world at her home in Orono, Maine, surrounded by her devoted family, after a brief decline in health.
Born on September 23, 1934, in Aurora, Maine, Mom was the cherished daughter of William S. Silsby and Myrle Coombs Silsby. She was the third of three children, growing up with strong values rooted in her Downeast heritage, which she proudly carried throughout her life. Her parents, along with her brothers William Silsby Jr. and his wife Noreen, and Herbert Silsby and his wife Ruth, have preceded her in death. Beverly was also predeceased by her beloved husband of 63 years, Preston A. McLean, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Dorothy and Ronald Pelletier, her nephew William Silsby III, niece Bonnie Silsby Inman, grandson Erin (AJ) McLean, and great-granddaughter Vanessa McLean.
Mom's life was filled with love and laughter, which she shared generously with her surviving family. She leaves behind her children: Cynthia (McLean)Peterson and her husband Woodrow “Pete”, Peter McLean and his wife Victoria, and Beth McLean and her partner Larry Godin. Her grandchildren, Joshua Peterson and his wife Laura, Meghann Peterson and her partner Ian Averill, Jaimie Royer, Erika McLean and her husband David, and Kade McLean Young, who were a source of immense pride and joy for her. Beverly was also blessed with great-grandchildren: McKenzie Eldridge and her husband Max, Caelan (Zoe) Peterson, Deanna McLean and her partner Ian Reid, Gavin McLean, Preston McLean, and Max McLean. Additionally, Mom treasured the lifelong friendships of Rachael Pooler, and Madeline and John Schroder, who were like family to her.
In her early years, Mom graduated from Ellsworth High School and later married the love of her life, Preston (Prep)McLean. After Dad completed his studies at McGill University Medical School, they settled in Brewer, Maine before making Bangor their permanent home. Mom dedicated herself to her family and served as an officer and board member in her family business, the Union River Telephone Company, until her retirement in 2025.
Mom was a woman of many talents and passions. She was an active member of the Bangor Junior League, where she enjoyed her role in the annual Follies and charity dances. An avid reader, her love for books was matched by her enjoyment of solitude. In her youth, she was an enthusiastic golfer, and she cherished the peaceful days spent at the family camp on Branch Lake in Ellsworth. Her keen eye for design often led to creative home projects, transforming spaces with her unique flair.
Those who knew Beverly will fondly remember her delightful sense of humor and her preference for intimate gatherings over large social circles. Her warmth, candidness, and dedication to family forged bonds that will endure beyond her time on earth.
A celebration of Mom's life will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, November 14, 2026, at the First United Methodist Church, located at 703 Essex Street, Bangor, ME 04401. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Saint Joseph Hospice nurse Kris for the compassionate care and companionship provided to Beverly during her final months.
In memory of Beverly, the family kindly suggests donations be made to a charity of choice, honoring her generous spirit and lifelong commitment to kindness.
Beverly's legacy of love, laughter, and resilience will forever remain in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
