Barbara A. Stewart, 80, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, May 15, 2026, at a Bangor hospital. She was born on March 21, 1946, in Houlton, Maine. Barbara was the daughter of Violet and Phillip Wallace. She attended local schools and graduated from Houlton High School, class of 1964. Early in her career Barbara worked in retail services, and later moved to Rockland, Maine where she worked in the insurance industry at W.C. Ladd's Insurance, holding several professional positions in state and national insurance organizations. Barbara also worked for the 4-H Camp Tanglewood, as their administrative assistant. After she retired and moved to Hermon, she volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House in Bangor, where she spoiled clients with lots of attention and homemade goodies. She was a member of the Essex Street Baptist church where she served as the church's clerk.
Barbara survived three husbands, John Koster of Rockland, Virgil (Gil) Pratt of Hermon, and Richard Stewart of Hermon. Barbara was predeceased by her parents, Phillip and Violet; her step-father, Cedric Glidden. Barbara is survived by her step-daughter, Judi Mchalik of Bangor and her husband, Kevin, and their children, Joey, Danny, Seth, and Virginia, as well as Viriginia's children, Brianna and Hermonie. Barbara is also survived by Eileen Leonard, Bill Leonard, Jim Leonard, Kate Leonard, and Tom Leonard, nephews and nieces from her marriage with John.
Gifts in Barbara's name may be made to the American Cancer Society or to your local animal shelter in honor of many dogs that enriched her life throughout the years.
A memorial service will be held at 1pm, Wednesday, June 17, 2026 at Essex Street Baptist Church, 82 Essex Street, Bangor, ME. Relatives and friends are welcome to share conversation and refreshment in the church fellowship hall following the service.
