WATERVILLE AND WINTERPORT - Barbara J. Sawyer, 85, died December 28, 2025, surrounded by her loving family, at Maine General Hospital. She was born June 7, 1940, in Bangor Maine, daughter of John William and Mary Louise (Foley) McMillan.
Barbara attended St Mary's Catholic School in Bangor before her family relocated to Frankfort. She graduated from Winterport High School, Class of 1958. Following graduation she worked and co-owned Frankfort General Store. After selling the store she worked at several financial institutions and was bookkeeper for local businesses.
Whenever Barbara's friends referred to her, they would always say, Barbara is such a "Lovely Lady". She cared and worried about all her friends and family. She always wanted you to know you were valued and worth celebrating. You could always count on her to send you a card for any and all occasions. She loved to honor You on your special day and insisted on family get togethers to celebrate with cake, regardless of age.
Barbara enjoyed bird watching and loved HER Cardinals. She was known for her sweet tooth and would always have cookies and cinnamon buns on hand to accompany a cup of Dunkin Decaf. Barbara was also a devout Catholic and longtime member of St Gabriel's church of Winterport, Maine. Her strong connection to God gave her comfort and strength. She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend.
Barbara donated to many charities regularly, however, St. Judes was her favorite. If you would like to donate in her name, I'm sure she would appreciate your thoughtfulness. St. Judes Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN. 38105 or https://www.stjude.org
Barbara was predeceased by her loving husband Larry Sawyer Sr., whom she was married to for 49 years. They both traveled all over the U.S. wherever Larry's jobs would take him. In their early years they enjoyed vacations to Hawaii, Cancun, Canada and Puerto Rico just to name a few. She is survived by her daughters, Julia Haskell, of Winterport and Diana LeBlanc and her husband, David, of Fayette; son, Joseph B. Haskell III and his wife, Vicki, of Newburgh and several grandchildren.
