BREWER - Barbara Ann (McCart) Howard, 91, passed away Sept. 14, 2025, at her home in Brewer. She was born May 28, 1934, in St. Stephen, N.B., Canada, the only child of Joseph and Eleanor (Corbett) McCart. Her early years were spent in Eastport, moving to Quincy, Mass. during WWII. When the war was over, she and her mother returned to Eastport, where she attended school. She graduated from Shead Memorial High School in 1952, and attended college for a year in Providence, R.I. With loving memories of Down East, she returned to Eastport, where she worked at the Sears Roebuck catalog store, Riviera Packing Co., and then the Mearl Corporation for two years. In 1956, she moved to Bangor when she was offered a job in Orono with the Maine Sardine Council.
Once in Bangor, her high school classmate, Joseph Nicholas introduced her to his friend, Stan Howard, who she married on July 16, 1958. After 16 years as a stay-at-home Mom, she went to work for Community Health and Counseling Services, retiring after 25 years. In retirement, she and Stan volunteered for many years at Eastern Maine Medical Center. She was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church in Bangor for over 60 years. She loved doing family genealogy, trying many new recipes and, in later years, was active with the Red Hatters. She loved visiting her hometown of Eastport, including annual family gatherings there with her children and grandchildren. Throughout Barbara's life, her warm smile and unfailing kindness touched and brightened many lives.
She and Stan raised five children, who survive her: Judy DiFilippo of Malvern, PA; Jerry (Diane) Howard of Cherry Hill, NJ; Catherine (Arthur) Terrill of Orono; James (Lori) Howard of Rockport; and Karen (Kevin) Raye of Perry. She is also survived by grandchildren, Rena (Anthony) Ferris, Jeremy (Tiffany) Howard, Stacey Atwood, Amy Cyr, Barry Terrill, Brandon Terrill, Joanna Howard, Kassandra Eberhart, and Nicholas Tenuto; and 18 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her step-sister, Susan Hicks, of Portland, many cherished nieces and nephews, lifelong friend, Mim Brooks Farris, special friends, Nancy Soucy and Jessie Walls, and many friends at the independent living facility Ellen Leach Home in Brewer where she lived happily for the past 11 years.
She was predeceased by her parents, Eleanor and Charles Stover, and Joseph and Marion McCart, husband Stan, and great-grandson Shaun.
