HERMON- Ann Marie Thornton, 64, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2026 after a 30-year battle with brain cancer. She was born May 15, 1962 in Bangor, Maine, the daughter of Harley Richard Murchie and Joyce Aldora (Briggs) Murchie.
Ann was a loving mother, grandmother and a devoted wife for 41 years. She enjoyed nature walks with her grandchildren, "recess" with her pups, vacationing with her husband Tim and was a compassionate registered nurse.
Ann cherished time spent with family. She enjoyed walks in her back yard hunting for birds and other creatures with her grandchildren, where she taught them about the plants and animals they encountered. She ensured the family gathered at least once a week for a home-cooked meal where she often used them as guinea pigs for her latest baked-good creations. Ann loved brisk evenings beside the backyard campfire, roasting hotdogs and marshmallows, watching her grandchildren play. She devoted most of her time and energy to being a Grammie; she attended games, dance recitals, appointments, and any other event or activity that her grandbabies were participating in.
Ann loved nature and yearned for trips to the ocean. She looked forward to annual Samoset trips where she would walk the breakwater, collect sea glass, explore tide pools and beachcomb for other treasures. She enjoyed listening to the peepers, keeping the backyard birds well fed, and maintaining her flowerbeds. Every morning, before school, she could be found taking peaceful walks around the family property with her grandson, Nolan - a treasured routine that spoke volumes about her devotion.
Ann had a passion for travel. She and Tim had most recently explored Alaska where she awed at the scenery and landscape. She also enjoyed vacationing to the Redwood Forest and San Francisco; taking in the wonders of the Redwood Trees and exploring the West Coast. A fond memory of vacation with the whole family to Cape Cod; all of Ann's favorite things in one place; family, the ocean, and exploring a new area.
Ann was a dedicated registered nurse for 40 years. She was highly skilled, compassionate and a fierce advocate for her patients. Throughout her career she specialized in cardiac, respiratory and brain injury care at the bedside and then transitioned to roles in Case Management and Utilization Review. To Ann, nursing wasn't just a profession; it was a calling to serve others with dignity and grace.
Ann was an avid reader, bird watcher, and crafter. She loved to crochet, quilt, sew, do puzzles, garden and grow flowers. She was intelligent, gentle, witty, and creative. She enjoyed a crisp diet coke and loved many artists and genres of music including Aerosmith, U2, Matchbox Twenty, Lady Gaga and Pink.
Ann is survived by her husband, Hawley "Tim" Thornton; daughters, Rebecca Levesque and her husband, Matt; Lindsay Dolloff and her husband, Jon; four grandchildren, Nolan and Sylvia Dolloff and Everett and Jett Levesque; aunt, Gayle Tewksbury and husband, Clarke; sister-in-law, Laurie Ramsay and husband, Kirk; nieces, Jade Ramsay and Nia Ramsay and their families; canine companions, Poppy and Ranger; and many dear friends. In addition to her parents, Ann was predeceased by her daughter, Amanda Thornton.
The family wishes to extend a special thank-you to her care teams at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center; Dr. Black, Dr. Golby, Dr. Reardon, Dr. Gillis; nurses on Grant 6 and in the ICU; Duma, Jenny, Lynne, Taylor and Lizzy and many others whose names we may have forgotten.
