Ann Frances Carr

Ann C. Carr of Hermon, known to most as Nancy, died peacefully in Bangor on August 25, 2026. The first teacher for nearly a generation of Hermon children, she was a committed educator and compassionate counselor who had an enduring impact on a great many individuals and families.

Nancy was born in Providence, R.I., on November 11, 1938, the daughter of Francis B. and Ann C. Cummings. At the age of six months, she returned with her mother to the family's potato farm in Benedicta. Five years later, the family relocated to Bangor to build the Cummings Potato Seed Cutter business alongside that machine's inventor, Nancy's grandfather, John A. Cummings.

She is survived by her sons, Joseph of Cumberland, R.I., and Michael (Teri) of Veazie, She also leaves five grandchildren, Brendan Carr of Swampscott, Mass.; Colleen (Robert) Chapruet of Fairfield, Conn.; Brian (Dafne) Carr of Swampscott, Mass.; Ryan (Abigail) Carr of Gorham; and Jordan (Rebekah) Carr of Windham, along with eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Ralph T. Carr, in 2022, and her daughter-in-law, Ellen M. Carr, in 2024.

Nancy and her family were grateful for the care, compassion, and friendship provided by Rebecca Thompson during the past several years. Her family also extends their thanks to the staff of the Maine Veterans' Home in Bangor for the kindness, dignity, and compassionate care they provided.

A member of St. Mary's Parish for more than 80 years, Nancy attended St. Mary's School and graduated from John Bapst High School in 1956. After two years at Salve Regina College in Newport, R.I., Nancy transferred to the University of Maine and earned a degree in education in 1960. An avid learner, she later earned two master's degrees and two certificates of advanced study, all from UMaine.

Nancy's teaching career began at Hermon High School, but she found her true classroom calling at the elementary school level, guiding and mentoring children at several grade levels over the course of two decades, including 16 years as Hermon's kindergarten teacher.

Later in her career, Nancy transitioned to work as a guidance counselor and served for four years in that role at Southern Aroostook Community School in Dyer Brook. In 1993, she transitioned again, establishing a private clinical counselor practice in Bangor (having earned a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor credential). She continued that work into her 80s.

Away from her professional life, Nancy enjoyed gardening, sewing, traveling, and the companionship of her dogs. She took particular joy in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and in bringing her family together, often hosting gatherings at her home in Hermon. Family remained at the center of her life, as did the Catholic faith that sustained her throughout it.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 806 Ohio St., Bangor on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at 11 a.m, with the Rite of Committal to follow at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center St. in Bangor, following the committal.
