Angelo Edward Zanchi

BANGOR - Angelo Edward Zanchi, 90, endearingly known as "Grumpy," though anyone who truly knew him understood the nickname was given with affection, lived a life full of heart, history, and devotion. He quietly passed away on August 3rd 2026, leaving behind stories, laughter, and a family who adored him beyond measure.

Born on May 29, 1936, in Natick, Massachusetts, son of Felix and Victoria P. (Falconi) Zanchi, he grew up on his grandparents' farm-an upbringing that shaped his pride in his Italian roots and taught him the value of hard work, loyalty, and family.

His fascination with history was lifelong. During the 200th anniversary of our country, he proudly served as a militia reenactor, embracing the chance to honor the past he so deeply respected. That same curiosity carried him across the world. He traveled extensively through Europe, explored national parks across the United States, and found a love for Aruba, where he returned year after year for sunshine, rest, and joy.

In Orono, he became a fixture of the community as first, the manager of NEWCO Market, and then the owner of L & A Market. They weren't just grocery stores-they were places where people felt known. He greeted neighbors by name, remembered their families, and made everyone feel welcome. His presence behind that counter touched countless lives.

For 65 years, he shared his life with his beloved wife, Lillian (McEachern)-his "passion flower." Their marriage was a partnership built on devotion, humor, and the kind of steady love that anchored their family. Five children - Mark and his wife Terri, Lynn (Seekins) and her husband Dana, Michael, Allyn and his partner Malena, and Lauren (Donovan) and her husband Bart --, and eight grandchildren - Angela, Stephen, Corrinne, Tyler, Sean, Jordan, Delaney and Avery - and four great grandchildren who all grew up with him cheering from the sidelines. He was there-present, proud, and beaming. His dedication to family wasn't just a value; it was his way of life.

He leaves behind a family who will forever miss his voice, his laugh, and the gentle strength he carried with him. They will continue to honor him-in the way they show up for one another, in the way they cherish their roots, and in the way they live with the same quiet devotion he modeled all his life.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00a.m., Friday, August 14, 2026, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Mary's Catholic Church, 768 Ohio St., Bangor, immediately followed by the Rite of Committal in Mt. Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, 449 Ohio St., Bangor. All are invited to share conversation and refreshments at the family's home, 151 Tamarack Trail, Bangor.
