Alan Hayes Schreiber, 82, passed away on April 6, 2026, at his home in Dedham, Maine. He was born on July 28, 1943, to Henry Albert Schreiber and Ruth Evelyn Brooks Schreiber in Baltimore, Maryland; a devoted husband, brother, son, grandfather, friend, and neighbor. Al lived a life marked by dedication to his country, his career, and the people and animals he held dear.

Alan grew up on a dairy farm in Maryland, a place he often remembered as the source of his sense of freedom. There, he was free to be curious, to explore, and to let his mind wander. Under his father’s guidance, he learned not only how things worked—but how to take them apart, rebuild them, and sometimes even blow them up in the name of discovery. Those early lessons sparked a lifelong engineering mindset. Al carried that spirit with him throughout his life, becoming someone who could build almost anything and fix whatever was broken, always guided by the same curiosity and hands-on ingenuity he first found on the farm.

Alan proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1963 to 1967 as a Photographer's Mate. During his service, he was stationed aboard the USS Constellation CVA-64, an experience he valued deeply and spoke of fondly throughout his life. Following his military service, Alan embarked on a distinguished career with the Department of Defense. He worked in signals analysis and processing for the National Security Agency, contributing to national security through his expertise and commitment.

Alan shared a profound bond with his late wife, Barbara Kay Baughman Schreiber, who passed away in 2014. Their relationship was one of mutual love and respect; they were inseparable partners who found joy in each other's company. They shared a love for working on their log home, cherished Barbara’s granddaughters, Amanda and Brittany Beene, and found joy in time spent with good friends. Al and Barbara also shared a love of animals, especially cats. Al loved to tell people how their cats were "overindulged," a testament to the care and affection they gave them.

In 2018, Al made the heartfelt decision to move to Maine. He settled next door to dear friends Linda and Daryl O’Kresik and their children, Ava and Evan, where he was truly a part of their family. Though not related by blood, Al was an integral part of the O’Kresik household—sharing laughter, stories, and countless dinners together. In this chosen family that he called his tribe, Al rediscovered a sense of purpose and renewed happiness.

Alan was preceded in death by: wife Barbara Kay Baughman Schreiber; parents Henry Albert Schreiber and Ruth Evelyn Brooks Schreiber; brother Keith Schreiber; sister Jeanne Schreiber Gross; friend Denis “Mick” Coan.

Alan is survived by: granddaughters Amanda and Brittany Beene; friends Linda and Daryl O'Kresik and their children Ava and Evan, Scott Stiffler, Fran Seger, Dana Sherrill, Sue Dillman and Laura Clark; brother-in-law Joel Gross; nephews Douglas Gross and Brian Gross; niece Wendy Gross; sister-in-law Marietta Schreiber. These relationships brought much happiness to Al’s life.

In addition to his professional accomplishments and cherished relationships, Alan will be remembered for his gentle nature, his kindness toward animals, and the special place cats held in his heart. His legacy is one of loyalty—to his country, his work, his loved ones—and compassion for animals.

May Al’s memory bring comfort to those who knew him and inspire others to live with the same kindness that defined his life.
