Obituary for Diana Springer Gordon (Springer)

Bangor and Bar Harbor - Diana S. Gordon passed away on February 21, 2015 at the Eastern Maine Medical Center, after a short illness. She was born in Bangor on June 26, 1933, the daughter of Paul Clayton Springer and Morita (Pickard) Springer. After attending the Veazie Grammar School, she graduated from Bangor High School and from the University of Maine, where she was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi, later serving as the advisor to that sorority chapter. She was married in 1965 to Harry Wight Gordon, born in Bar Harbor and later of Orono; he passed away in 1978.

After graduating from UMO, she worked for a number of years in the University’s Office of the Treasurer. Most of her subsequent career was spent at the Eastern Maine Medical Center, beginning as coordinator of volunteers and then assuming the post of overall risk manager for the hospital, until her retirement. She was a sustaining member of the Junior League of Bangor, and a member of the PEO sisterhood Chapter B, first in Bangor and later Chapter K Maine. She was a member of All Souls Congregational Church in Bangor, and in later years of the First Congregational Church of Ellsworth.

Diana moved from Orono to reside year-round at her long-time and much-loved summer home on Oak Point in Trenton nearly 35 years ago, then a decade ago moved to Birch Bay Village retirement community in Bar Harbor. She was an active member of the Birch Bay community, making many friends there, participating in book groups and serving in various resident capacities. Despite failing health in recent years, she much enjoyed her time there. She had many interests, including the collection of miniatures, and genealogical research. When she was still in good health she loved travel, visiting a number of other countries. She had a passion for animals and birds, both domestic and wild.

She is survived by her siblings, sisters Joanne S. Perry of Chevy Chase, Maryland and Jacqueline S. Sprague, of Spring, Texas and her brother and sister-in-law, William H. and Christine P. Springer, of Alexandria, Virginia; as well as six nieces and nephews, their spouses, and fourteen grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her two brothers-in-law Charles H. Perry and Richard S. Sprague, Sr.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call 5 to 7pm Thursday February 26, 2015 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor. A funeral service will be held 11am Friday February 27, 2015 at All Souls Congregational Church, 10 Broadway, Bangor with the Rev. Dr. James L. Haddix, pastor and teacher, officiating.
