Obituary for Martha Dunn Vowles (Dunn)

With heavy hearts, we, Victoria and Paul Burpee, Jeffrey and Sue Vowles, and Beth Kingsbury announce the passing of our mother, Martha Maria Dunn Vowles, 91, on January 22, 2017. Mama was born in Greenbush, Maine, on August 26, 1925, the daughter of Carl and Helen Dunn. She was blessed with loving siblings; sisters, Evelyn, Emily, Clarice, Melissa, Veda, Irene, and her brother Carl. Mama and our dad, Edward Vowles, were married on June 21, 1947.

Our mother was a very generous with time, attention, and gifts. Mama attended Old Town Methodist Church. She was a member of Eastern Star and Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.

Mama loved school. She was a graduate of Olamon Grammer School and Lee Academy. As a young child Mama dreamed of becoming a teacher. She accepted her first teaching position at the young age of nineteen and began pursuing a degree at the University of Maine. Mama’s career spanned thirty-six years. She taught elementary grades in Greenbush at the Olamon Grammer School and later at the Helen S. Dunn School. In 1964, Mama accepted a teaching position in Bangor. She taught first grade at Bangor’s Downeast School until her retirement.

Mama leaves behind her greatest joy and legacy, her grandchildren and their families; Eric Lundgren, Karen White, Jennifer Haas, Michael Stewart, Ashlee Vowles, and Brett Vowles. She is also survived by two sisters Veda Madden and her husband Carroll, Irene Haverlock and her husband Edward, sisters-in-law Thelma Vowles and Shirley Dunn, special cousins, The Maddens and many nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service will be held in the spring at Goulds Ridge Cemetery, Passadumkeag. Those who wish to remember our mother in a special way may make gifts in her name to the Raish Peavey Haskell Children’s Cancer and Treatment center, P.O. Box 931, Bangor, ME 04401-0931. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.Brookings-Smith.com.

Within the corner of my heart
I’ve safely tucked away
A sweet bouquet of memories
From happy bygone days,
And there within each memory
I see your smiling face-
Dear Mother, you’re a flower
That time will never fade.
