Obituary for Marie Germaine Hafford (Lagace)

Print
Marie Germaine Hafford, 90, of Hampden, passed away peacefully at her home and was received by our Lord on November 1st, 2018 in Hampden, Maine.

Germaine was born in Drummond, New Brunswick, Canada to Edmond and Anna Lagace on March 30th, 1928. At the age of 20, in 1948, she immigrated to the United States to be with her husband, Joseph Wilfred Hafford, to whom she was married for 67 years until his passing in June of 2015. She was very free in giving, sharing and open handed to relatives, friends and strangers with her labor, time, gifts, and money. Some might have mistaken her for an ordinary woman, for she did not put on false airs, nor thought herself better than anyone else. She dressed ordinary and was a friend to all and quick to join in laughter with others. She was not ordinary. No, she was extraordinary. The people who knew her knew that some of the errands she would be running included bringing food to soup kitchens, clothes to the needy, and furniture to homeless shelters. This is how she lived her life. She lived through her heart. Germaine was a very rich person.

Germaine is survived by her daughter, Louine Marie Olivares (Ciro) of Hampden; sons, Brent Edgar Hafford (Annaleis) of Penobscot, Joseph Craig Hafford of Hampden, Mark Terry Hafford (Shirley) of North Berwick, Paul Keven Hafford (Linda) of North Berwick, Daniel Dale Hafford (Trica); grandchildren, Micah Hafford, Aaron Hafford, John Hafford, Justin Hafford, Amy Hafford, Ryan Hafford, Rachelle (Hafford) McGrew, Benjamin Hafford, Andrea Hafford, Danielle Hafford, Evan Hafford, Oliver Hafford, Alexandria Hafford, Jordan Hafford, Chad Gordon, Monique Gordon; and nineteen great grandchildren. Germaine is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, their son, John Wilfred Hafford, and granddaughter, Sarah A. Hafford-Reed. The family gives thanks and recognizes the loving and attentive in-home care provided to Germaine by her daughter, Louine Olivares and her family during our mother’s extended battle with Alzheimer’s Disease, and to the St. Joseph’s Hospital Hospice Care Center for their support in her final days.

Visitation will be from 5–7 PM, Friday, Nov. 9, 2018 at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 45 Western Ave, Hampden. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, Western Ave, Hampden, 11 AM, Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018, followed by the Rite of Committal at the Lakeview Cemetery, Hampden. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments in the church parish hall following the committal. In lieu of flowers, and in memory and love of Germaine, the family asks that those wishing to honor her, reach out to help their own families, friends and strangers by deed with a helping hand or by volunteering time and services at their church or community organization for those less fortunate and in need. Condolences may be expressed at the online guestbook at BrookingsSmith.com.
