Cremation Rules and Policies

There are many ways in which you can make a fitting tribute to the person being remembered. We are well known in cremation service for our flexible pricing and innovative approaches to memorialization.

Click on Selected Package Offerings for a list of our special pricing. You may, if you wish, itemize from our General Price List which is available from any of our convenient neighborhood locations, by appointment.

Brookings-Smith provides cremation services tailored to family wishes and needs. We use Pine Grove Crematorium in Bangor for the actual cremation, which is close to all of our locations. There is a requirement by the crematory that an Authorization for Cremation needs to be signed by the family before a cremation can be completed. Please select one to view or print, the authorization form, who can sign, and detailed information. A viewing room is available, allowing families to view the loved one privately before cremation takes place.

There are some State Laws and rules and regulations of the crematory regarding cremation in the State of Maine. Please click here for a complete listing. (go to the Cremation Rules and policies Page)

Casketed Service of Remembrance:
Many people do not realize that you can have an open casket viewing and funeral before cremation is to be completed. Embalming would be required to preserve the remains for a public visitation. Sometimes people select a rental casket for this type of service where the casket shell is reused every time and the interior is changed after each use. After services are completed then the remains are taken to the crematory for the cremation itself.

Service of Remembrance:
This type of service is for people who would like to have the cremated remains present for a Memorial Service at one of our facilities, a cemetery, your home, or a church. During this time we found that people enjoy pictures of good times or even have a DVD presentation completed that reflects great times during a persons life.

Gathering of Remembrance:
A gathering at one of our funeral homes is when you set a time and place to talk with family and friends about the loss of a loved one. This is a non-structured time, much like a visitation or wake in years past, that allows the community to talk and mourn a person's loss.

Memorial Reception:
For the families who wish to acknowledge the community and allow them to share in a time of conversation and refreshments. The family can invite relatives and friends to one of our reception facilities for a range of time for an informal sharing of memories and comforting of spirits.

Simple Cremation:
This is our most basic form of cremation service, would include the handling of the cremation, without any public formal services.

Cremation Rules and Policies

When the type of disposition of human remains selected is cremation there are several requirements that need to be followed:

  • The remains cannot be cremated until 48 hours after the time of death
  • The following paperwork and permits need to be completed:
    • A copy of a death certificate
    • A permit for disposition
    • A Medical Examiners Permit
  • A Cremation Authorization needs to be signed by the closest next of kin in the following order:
    • Spouse
    • Son or Daughter
    • Parents
    • Brother or Sister
    • Legal Guardian
    • Self (If part of an Advanced Plan)
  • The crematory requires an Alternative Container as a minimum to hold the remains before and during the actual cremation
  • That any kind of prosthetic device such as a pacemaker, silicone implant, or radioactive implant is removed prior to cremation

Many people think that embalming is a state law or requirement and it is not. It is a requirement by the funeral home if an open casket funeral or a winter entombment is requested as a service type. It is possible to have a private viewing of the remains with no embalming prior to cremation if the family makes this request. The remains are placed in a climate controlled room until the 48 hours time limit is up.
