"Walked a mileā€¦.."

We are fortunate that, by chance, we were West Street Bar Harbor neighbors to Tom’s beloved Bar Harbor Club and his nearby hotels. We will always remember his smile and humor.

Our gallery is right across the street from Harborside Hotel so we had a great view of the construction project. One Sunday we saw Tom walking across the parking lot of the construction site in his white socks…no shoes. “Odd”, we thought as Tom got into his car and drove away.

Turns out that it has been an especially rainy weekend and the crew had Sunday off. Tom grabbed a young man that he knew and two of them swept water off the roof with large brooms. After their work was done, Tom said to the young man, “Those are not very good shoes that you have on. Here take mine. I have lots of shoes”.

That night at dinner the young man who had worked with Tom that day told us the story of the shoes and added with a Tom-like humor, “Mom, I have walked a mile in Tom Walsh’s shoes!”
