Obituary for John Joseph "Joe" Cushing, Jr.

JOHN JOSEPH “JOE” CUSHING JR.
BREWER – John Joseph “Joe” Cushing Jr., 88, passed away suddenly January 29, 2018, at a Bangor hospital. He was born May 4, 1929, in Bangor, the son of John J. and Margaret I. (Freeman) Cushing.
Joe graduated from John Bapst, Class of 1949. He was a three sport athlete, eventually becoming inducted into the John Bapst Sports Hall of Fame. Following high school, he attended Higgins Classical Institute in Charleston. Joe enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, where he was stationed on the USS Hyman (DD-732) Destroyer. He served for 4 years. Joe worked for and retired from Eastern Fine Paper. He and his wife, Edith, were troop greeters at BIA for many years. They enjoyed taking trips together throughout the United States and Canada. In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased by brothers, Richard Cushing, James Robert “Bob” Cushing; and a sister, Jean Sanborn. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Edith (Moore) Cushing; a son, John Joseph “Joe” Cushing III and wife, Terri of Hampden; grandchildren, John Joseph Cushing IV of Dexter; Mallory Cara Cushing of Skowhegan; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Kathleen Houle and husband, Norman “Houley” of Barrington, NH; a brother-in-law, Donald Sanborn of Bangor; a sister-in-law, Noni Cushing of Hermon; and many nieces and nephews. A Funeral Liturgy outside of Mass will be held 4 p.m., Monday, February 5, 2018, at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main St., Brewer. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 3 p.m. until time of service Monday.
