Obituary for Dorothy Winship (Chase)

Bangor - Dorothy (Jones) Winship passed away peacefully January 17, 2018, after a short illness. She was born in Bradford in 1925, the daughter of Clyde and Lula (Bishop) Chase. She attended Bradford schools and was a lifelong member of the Bradford Baptist Church. In 1946 she married Kenneth Jones, also of Bradford, who had recently returned from service in World War II. They continued to live in Bradford where they raised a family of three sons. Mum’s life was devoted to caring for people. She helped to care for her parents at the end of their lives, and she cared for her husband through a lengthy period of ill health until his passing in 1971. Throughout all that time she also cared for her second oldest son, Kendall, who had been disabled by cerebral palsy at birth. One of her biggest regrets was that she had to send him to a care facility in 1989 when she could no longer care for him herself.

She continued to live in Bradford until 1997 when she married Parker Winship who had formerly been a resident of the town. They spent several happy years dividing time between a home in Florida and a camp on Little Pushaw in Hudson. They enjoyed traveling and visiting with family and friends. In 2014, she took on her caring role again when Parker was transferred to a nursing home. She spent time by his bedside every day for a period of about two years until his passing in 2016.

Mum is survived by her son Stephen and his wife Deanna, their son Trevor, his wife Carol and their sons Collin and Aaron; her son Barry and his wife Nadine, their son Corey and his daughter Emily; stepdaughters Donna Taylor, her husband Ron and their family; Randy Newell, her husband Bob and their family; and Valerie Nelson, her family and her partner Brian Young. She is also survived by a number of caring nieces and nephews, as well as dear friends in Villa East where she and Parker made their home from 2010 on.

In addition to her husbands and her son Kendall, she was predeceased by her parents; her sister Athalie Page and her husband Edwin; her sister Lora Tasker and her husband Harry; and her brother Clair. She was also predeceased by a special lifelong friend, Maybelle Reeves, of Bradford.

Special thanks to Visiting Angels, St. Joseph’s Hospice Care, and Stillwater Healthcare for their excellent care, compassion, and concern during her illness.

A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday May 3, 2018 at the Williams Cemetery, Williams Road, Bradford with Rev. Donald Booker, pastor of the Bradford Baptist Church, officiating. Relatives and friends are invited to share conversation and refreshments at the Bradford Baptist Church, immediately following the service.
